Freedom of Speech

Friday, March 30th, 2007

I have no problem with Rosie O’Donnell having and expressing opinions. She has the same rights you and I have, even if her recent comments might be more appropriately shared with a certified counselor along side the folks who still believe man never walked on the moon, the United States blew up the World Trade Center, Roosevelt let Japan bomb Pearl Harbor so we could get into the war, and other conspiracy theories. My initial reaction to O’Donnell’s delusional ramblings was disdain, now I’m beginning to believe she needs help.

What I do have a problem with is ABC, and unfortunately Disney, providing a daily nationwide forum to someone who’s ramblings are so far beyond the realm of reality.  There are people who will believe her simply because of who she is, which may seem impossible to those of us who are still living in the real world, but look no further than the applauding studio audience for evidence.

If these crazy ramblings were at least debated by the “panel”, perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad, but as we’ve learned, Queen Rosie only allows concurring opinions to be expressed … others are shouted down.

Bill Maher was fired by ABC for far less absurd comments than she has made:

From the NYLA website: Bill Maher, who was essentially fired by ABC for saying that the September 11 terrorists were not “cowards” (in the President’s word), and boldly continuing the logic by suggesting that surgical strikes at civilians might be more so, concludes his six-year run on that network of “Politically Incorrect” on June 28th.

And yet, O’Donnell continues to be given a platform for spewing her ridiculous, and potentially dangerous, tripe:

“We were attacked not by a nation, and as a result of the attack and the killing of 3,000 innocent people we invaded two countries and killed innocent people in their countries”

We attacked countries who were harboring and supporting terrorists who attacked the United States. Yes, civilians were killed, but they were not targeted, and many of the claims of casulties from errant US bombs were proven to be from defensive weapons fired by Iraqi’s. Using O’Donnell’s rules of engagement, we would have lost WWII.

“Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam” (the saddest part is this was followed by loud applause)

OK, we get it. She hates Christians, especially Catholics, and despises the Pope… but would a sane person really believe this?

“We are bombing innocent people in other countries”

Are we? I must have missed that.

“Iran is a danger; Iraq and Afghanistan never threatened to kill us”

Iran is a danger? I’m surprised she said this considering other statements she has made about Iran. But Iraq not only threatened to kill us, they frequently shot at our fighters as the patrolled the no fly zone, funded suicide bombers, and supplied weapons to terrorists. All Afghanistan did was provide a base of operations to bin Laden. Why doesn’t Walters call her on this stuff when she makes such stupid statements?

By the way, the ignorance level on this program is astounding, and although this post is about O’Donnell, on the show that Rosie called for Bush to be impeached, Joy Behar showed that she has no clue what-so-ever on how our democracy (which is a republic) works:

“If the country is against the surge, if the Congress is against the surge are we gonna call ourselves a democracy when the president makes this decision without the people? It’s not a democracy anymore.”

Right, we ll get to vote on everything… kind of like American Idol. We elected the president, the president is the Commander in Chief, he makes those decisions, Congress either funds the war or doesn’t, and we don’t get to vote on each and every decision.

Back to O’Donnell:

“Someone, I believe, should call for the impeachment of George Bush (audience applause)  to let the world know … I’ll tell you why.. whether or not… listen.. wait, can I can I, let me finish and then you can go. I think we should do it so the world knows the nation is not standing behind this president’s choices, that the nation, a democracy, feels differently than the man who is leading as if this were a dictatorship, and that we represent this country, he does not lead as a monarch (Joy: “amen” & more applause) And that’s what I think. Even if he doesn’t get impeached that we should call on it to tell the world we are against his policies.”  … “I’m not saying you have to go… I’m saying someone should call for it to be in the history books, someone should stand up and say when democracy was dying I senator said I am against this. To call for an impeachment is a political statement from the people they represent. Isn’t there some senator brave enough to stand up and say it… (after a very brief opposing view from Elisabeth Hasselbeck)… right but we should the president because he had an affair”

First, if the world doesn’t get there are shrill voices opposing the president at this point, they aren’t paying attention. Second, presidents have to break laws to be impeached, it is NOT a political process, it is a constitutional process. And third, although it is convenient to make believe Clinton was impeached for an affair (although having an affair with an INTERN is a bad thing… some might even say worse than writing a naughty letter to an intern), the fact is he was impeached because he broke the law.

“The first thing that the president should do, whoever is the next president, is repeal the Patriot Act and replace it with the Constitution… The Patriot Act is the biggest threat to democracy in the 200 year history of this nation.

Sigh.. first of all, to make believe, or worse really believe, the president instituted the Patriot Act all by himself is just plain stupid. It is rather difficult to understand the thinking that the Patriot Act, enacted by Congress, signed by the president, and not stricken by the Supreme Court, is somehow unconstitutional. Second, the president can not repeal laws… that would be the job of Congress.  So if this is such a great idea Rosie, how come the wonderful lib/Dem congress you so proudly point to has not repealed this law yet. And finally, most of the provisions of the Patriot Act already were on the books and used to fight crime… the Act extends these provisions to the fight against terrorism and allows for cooperation between agencies that were forbidden in the past. Please read something besides nutwing blogs and find out what the hell you are talking about before you open your mouth in front of an audience who may actually believe you just because you are on TV.

Video clips that I pulled these quotes from were posted earlier if you would like to view them… a couple were pulled from YouTube and are no longer available unfortunately.

Couldn’t find a video clip that was of decent quality, but she also recently compared the illegal seizure of British troops to the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Essentially she is saying that the British, at the direction of President Bush, purposefully placed sailors in harms way to provoke the Iranians as a pretext for starting a war with Iran.

Here’s a new one where O’Donnell implies that the United States may have had something to do with 9/11…  it’s towards the end after a lot of other off the wall comments by 3/4’s of the panel:

YouTube Preview Image

Apparently she expanded on this idea on here blog. An excellent clip from Scarborough Country:

YouTube Preview Image

Interested in Rosie’s source for such incredible insight? Here’s one of the blogs she proudly provides a link to on her site: Scholars for 9/11 Truth. Here’s some of their “view”:

Propaganda by the government and the corporate media would have us believe that the 9/11 “inside job” hypothesis is not merely controversial but unsupported by proof. That is wrong. Academics, experts, and scholars who have examined the physical evidence and considered this event within its historical context tend to converge in agreement that the inside-job hypothesis is, in fact, strongly supported by the available evidence, while the version advanced in The 9/11 Commission Report is not only false but provably false and in crucial respects physically impossible. That the official account of 9/11 is a lie and that 9/11 appears to have been an inside job is no longer a matter of serious scientific debate.

It is no wonder O’Donnell has lost touch with reality if she reads extreme far left radical blogs like “scholars” and believes she is learning the truth about government conspiracies.

I poked around her blog a bit and found the following words of wisdom (surprisingly, I learned she actually tones it down for “The View”; also note, she keeps commenting off.. guess she’s afraid to hear what some think of her ideas):

False flag operations are covert operations conducted by governments, corporations, or other organizations, which are designed to appear as if they are being carried out by other entities. the british did it on purpose
into iranian waters as US MILITARY BUILD UP ON THE IRANIAN BORDER we will be in iran before summer as planned

The impeachment movement is uniting and expanding. We’re joining with many other organizations to launch Impeach07, a coordinated series of actions aimed at impeaching Bush and Cheney through widespread public protest, creative dissent, media activism, education, and lobbying

rory kennedy is an amazing film maker she has a new documentary on hbo THE GHOSTS OF ABU GHRIAB u must watch this painful as it is it is hard to imagine what went on there sanctioned and directed by this president and his men
donald rumsfeld is a war criminal guilty of so much death spiritual and physical
most cannot fathom the power of evil watch this movie see for urself what we as a nation have become there in the dark take america back we can we must
save democracy

Too long to reprint, but here is the link to where she explains the the US brought down one of the buildings on 9/11.

Bottom line folks… she needs help.  This women has lost touch with reality and is so thoroughly blinded by hate that she can not see any reality outside that of her own depressing, anguished world. I feel sorry for her, but there is no need for this to be played out on national TV where others may be infected and be drawn into the netherworld of paranoid delusion, crossing the border between reality and the things that go bump in the night, trapped in a sad existence where “they” are out to get “us”. She needs to be relieved of duty and someone needs to get her some help.

Kerry’s Payback

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

As a Belgian-American, a proudly non-priviledged, underrepresented, minority group who does not ask much in return for our great contributions to this country, I am outraged that Senator John Kerry is playing politics with the appointment of Sam Fox to be the ambassador to Belgium…  OK, not really. Frankly, I don’t really care who the ambassador to Belgium is, and I have never really identified myself as a Belgian-American.

But there is something that does bother me about the forced withdrawal of this nomination.  John Kerry has disqualified a qualified individual because this individual legally (LEGALLY) contributed to a legal (LEGAL) political action committee that opposed his run for president. To be considered for this position by John and the other Dems, all Fox needed to do was apologize for exercising his 1st Amendment right to free speech.

Now that is scary.

By the way… since the can of worms is open yet again… the majority of the accusations levied by the Swift Boat Vets were supported with documented evidence, and I have copies of some of it; much can be found just by googling articles from the Boston Globe (not exactly a right-wing rag).  So… if the good senator decides to run for president again, I will also exercise my 1st Amendment right yet again. I’ll just have to live with the burden of disqualifying myself for an appointment to an ambassador position.

“Politics of personal destruction”?  Only if you believe discussing and correcting historical inaccuracies is a bad thing.

Who’s Playing Politics?

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Sandy Berger steals US secrets and destroys them in an obvious cover-up, gets a slap on the wrist, does not submit to a lie detector test as agreed in his plea agreement, and Congress yawns.

Politically appointed US Attorneys are legally fired for “political reasons” and Leaky Leahy sees monsters in the closet:

From Yahoo News/AP: Sampson’s testimony Thursday is voluntary, though committee chairman Patrick Leahy told reporters he has kept a signed subpoena under lock and key in case Gonzales’ chief of staff backed out.

There was no indication of that happening. In his remarks, Sampson said he was pleased to appear and pledged to stay as long as necessary.

Nothing will stop the investigation, Leahy said Wednesday — not even Gonzales’ resignation.

“In case anybody’s thinking of shortchanging it that way, I have a message for them: We’ll finish this investigation before we’ll have any confirmation hearings for a new attorney general,” said Leahy, D-Vt. “I want to know what the facts were.”

Is this really important senator? As important as finding out what Sandy Berger and Bill Clinton are hiding about pre-911 security issues?  Did President Bush have a legal right to fire these attorneys? Since he obviously did, what the hell are you investigating? Isn’t this all about politics?

Too bad Leahy’s curiosity does not extend into areas of national security and are so transparently political.

For the record, although the headline reads: “Aide: U.S. attorneys fired over politics”, what he actually said was:

“The distinction between ‘political’ and ‘performance-related’ reasons for removing a United States attorney is, in my view, largely artificial,” said Kyle Sampson.

“A U.S. attorney who is unsuccessful from a political perspective … is unsuccessful,” Sampson said.

Sampson maintained that adherence to the president’s and attorney general’s priorities was a legitimate standard. He strongly denied Democrats’ allegations that some of the prosecutors were dismissed for pursuing Republicans too much and Democrats not enough in corruption cases.

“To my knowledge, nothing of the sort occurred here,” he said. “As presidential appointees, U.S. attorneys serve at the ‘pleasure of the president’ and may be asked to resign for almost any reason, with no public or private explanation.”

In other words, the President and the Attorney General of the United States set the agenda and if the attorneys they hire do not work towards the defined goals of the administration, they risk being removed.  Well, duh!

By the way… did Nancy Pelosi, who has all but called President Bush a laggard lout, really tell the president to take a deep breath because Bush threatened to veto the pork-laden bill with the ridiculous path-to-surrender timeline? Did she really say that he needs to respect the constitutional role of Congress while they will recognize the constitutional role of the president? Isn’t the veto part of that role? And if anyone needs to take a deep breath, isn’t it the shrill left wing loons like Pelosi and Reed who rode to power on the backs of moderate Dems who, if they had any self-respect, would reject the lunatic fringe of their party.

Reconcile these statements from the press conference if you can:

From CBS News: Pelosi — “I would extend a hand of friendship to the president, just say to him, ‘Calm down with the threats, there’s a new Congress in town. We respect your constitutional role. We want you to respect ours.’ ”

The fact is the president of United States as the Commander-In-Chief has weakened our military.

“We’re the Congress. Let’s work together for the American people. Take a deep breath, Mr. President.”

With friends like these…

And how about this bit of irony:

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) also commented on the Democratic leadership’s decision not to allow Republicans the chance to offer amendments on the Iraq funding bill:

“We pledge to be fair but not stupid…Until the Republicans come to grips with doing real things with their opportunities, the American people are going to continue to be disappointed by their solely playing politics.”

Priceless… we are not allowing the Republicans to offer amendments to a bill, amendments that would need to be voted on just like any other amendment, because the REPUBLICANS are playing politics… no politics on the part of the DEMOCRATS blocking the representation of approximately 50% of the UNITED STATES from offering amendments…  none at all. Unbelievable.

One closing thought… Senator Webb may have made the best political move in years, switching the Democrat Party. Had he been a Republican when he potentially broke the law, he’d actually be in trouble right now and the press would even be investigating the issue. Way to go Senator… you get a free pass… so far.

Headlines and Responses

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

So many articles… so little time. So let’s just look at headlines for a moment.

Clinton: Firings a Bush admin power grab

Right… the President of the United States fired eight US Attorneys to “grab power”. Senator Clinton. In so much as you are running for president, it might interest you to learn that:

  • The president already has power
  • Firing eight US Attorneys does not give him any more power (it’s not like leveling up in a video game)
  • Exercising his right to fire these attorneys really is not much different than other presidents firing ALL US attorneys at the start of a term. What are the differences? If wasn’t the start of the term and it was not a mindless, fire-them-all, approach. But the authority to do so, regardless of the reason, is still there.  Unlike your firing of career Whitehouse staffers, there is nothing unusual about firing political appointees

Dems: Bush must accept Iraq timetable

Unless of course he doesn’t. Senator Reed, the recent election did not result in a new president. It barely resulted in a shift of power in the Senate. Although President Bush hasn’t used his veto pen much at all, it doesn’t mean he has lost the authority to do so. You barely had the votes to pass this ludicrous bill, what makes you think you will be able to override a veto? Stop playing politics with the war and pick up a copy of the US Constitution… might be helpful if you read it on occasion just to assure yourself it hasn’t change recently.

Clinton aids Vilsack with campaign debt

Endorsement for sale? Amazing what $400,000 will buy these days.

McCain: Progress is being made in Iraq

Hey!  Who let this headline slip passed the screeners?

Women’s group plans to endorse Clinton

Well duh. NOW supporting Clinton is not news… the NRA supporting Clinton would definitely be news.

Is Obama all style and little substance?

The answer depends on whether he is the Dem nominee or not.  As long as we are in Primary season, these questions will be asked. If he is nominated, you can be certain that Obama will be the greatest man to walk this Earth.

Kerry presses baseball on DirecTV deal

How dare they package and market their product in a way that they believe will maximize profits. The good news is maybe this will be a good hobby for Kerry so that he won’t have time for anything important that he can mess up.

Hey! Where’s the headline about Senator Webb? A gun carrying Democrat who refused to come to the defense of his aid who spent his birthday in jail for carrying Webb’s LOADED gun into the Capitol building. Guess  I’ll need to look harder to find anything on this one beyond Fox News.

Next posting, later today: “Oh what a tangled Webb…”   –  I’m so clever  ;-)

Tony Snow

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Tony Snow has been one of my favorite commentators for some time now and he has brought a sharp wit, class and character to his role as White House Press Secretary.

I’ll miss seeing him on the tube, but he will be in my thoughts and prayers as he fights his latest battle with cancer. He may not be able to step back into his press secretary role in the near future, but I look forward to hearing his insightful commentray and seeing his ironic smile grace our evening news somewhere down the road.

Get well soon Tony…

You Write the Headline

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

If you’ve visited with any frequency, by now you know I have a pet peeve:  misleading headlines.

Here’s the article that caught my eye today, reprinted in full so that you can decide what the headline should be based upon the actual content and the significance of what is being reported (I’ve bolded what I see as key points… feel free to disagree):

From Yahoo News/AP: MOSCOW – Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday criticized the United States for what it called over-reliance on force and warned Washington against military action against Iran.

But in a major review of foreign policy priorities, the ministry said Russia was ready to cooperate to end global crises if Washington treats it as an equal partner.

The statement reflects Russia’s growing confidence and economic clout, and appears to be a signal to Washington that, while the two nations can work together, Russia will not always follow the U.S. lead. It also plays to national pride in advance of parliamentary and presidential elections.

Russia criticized what it called “the creeping American strategy of dragging the global community into a large-scale crisis around Iran,” saying that Iran helps maintain stability in Afghanistan and Central Asia.

At the same time, the ministry’s paper assailed Iran for its “unconstructive” stance, reflecting growing Kremlin irritation with its ally’s refusal to freeze uranium enrichment, as the U.N. demands.

Russia and China, both permanent UN Security Council members with significant trade ties with Iran, have opposed U.S. efforts to impose harsh sanctions against the country. But years of growing international mistrust over Iran’s ultimate goals led to initial U.N. sanctions in December and to tougher penalties imposed last Saturday.

Iran has remained defiant, rejecting the latest sanctions and announcing a partial suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog. It also accused Russia of caving in to Western pressure.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday that the latest set of sanctions was a “call for the resumption of talks rather than an instrument of punishment” — a statement apparently aimed both at soothing Iran and assuring Russians public that their government was not betraying its partner.

The ministry’s paper emphasized the need to conduct a “balanced course on Iran, protecting our national interests in that country while preventing violations of the nuclear non-proliferation regime.”

The ministry also hinted that Russia would tie weapons sales to Iran to its cooperation on the enrichment program. “Military-technical ties with Iran must develop on the basis of strict compliance with Russia’s international obligations while taking into account developments related to the Iranian nuclear program,” it said.

Russia recently delivered 29 Tor M-1 air defense missile systems to Iran despite strong U.S. complaints.

The strategy paper said that arms exports would remain an important component of Russia’s foreign policy.

When you consider that Iran is a Russian ally, there are some pretty harsh words in here. Essentially, Russia is trying to maintain the perception that it is supporting Iran while at the same time not voting against sanctions, indicating Iran needs to comply with UN demands, and even threatening to tie weapons sales to Iran’s compliance.

But.. the foreign minister did criticize the US for “over-reliance on force” and of dragging the world into a crises around Iran.  Setting aside whether you believe this is true or not for the moment, what is the key point of this article?  Russia’s criticism of the US reaction to Iran’s non-compliance or Russia’s criticism of an ally?

To put this into perspective, substitute the United States for Russia, Russia for the United States and Israel for Iran in this article. would this be the headline:

US Slams Russian Global Policy

Or would we more likely see this blasted across every paper in the world:

US Slams Israel for Non-Compliance to UN Demands; Threatens to Withdraw Military Support

If you guessed number 2, you are 100% right.

So why is the headline for this article: “Russia Slams US Global Policy”? Because my friends, the press no longer simply reports, they have taken it upon themselves to influence public opinion in a way that should be reserved for editorials and opinion pieces. They may even report the whole story, but they will ensure you know what they believe are the key takeaways, and you can be certain it will almost always be something that will paint the US in a negative light.

Senate Attack on US Constitution Continues

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

First we learned that President Bush did not have the right to fire US Attorney’s, even though he does, because he may have fired them for the “wrong reasons”, even though he doesn’t need a reason.

Then we learned that exercising a presidential right to veto a bill that did not get enough votes to override a veto is an impeachable offense.

And now we find out that exercising a 5th Amendment right is an admission of guilt:

From Yahoo News/AP: Goodling, on voluntary leave from the Justice Department, was one of several aides closely involved in planning the firings. She was called to testify as part of a Senate inquiry, and her refusal appeared to surprise Justice officials who hours earlier said department aides would fully cooperate with the investigation.

“I have decided to follow my lawyer’s advice and respectfully invoke my constitutional right,” Goodling said in a statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Her attorney, John Dowd, said the Senate inquiry amounts to a perjury trap for his client. “One need look no further than the recent circumstances and proceedings involving Lewis Libby,” Dowd said.

“The American people are left to wonder what conduct is at the base of Ms. Goodling’s concern that she may incriminate herself in connection with criminal charges if she appears before the committee under oath,” said Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy D-Vt

Really? So every time someone exercises their constitutional right to avoid self-incrimination, that in and of itself is incriminating?

Senator, please pick up a copy of the US Constitution and read it. Here, I’ll save you a quarter for the copy machine:

Amendment V  (Senator, to avoid any misunderstanding, ”V” is the same as “5″ in this case)

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

I bolded the key phrase to save you some time.  The part that was clearly left out of this amendment was: “… nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, with the understanding that refusing to testify will be an indication of guilt in and of itself…”

And they want us to believe THEY are the ones protecting our rights…

By the way…  chalk this up as an unintended consequence of the Libby witch-hunt.
