Congressional Ethics and other myths

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Thank goodness the Democrats have taken over congress and have begun the process of cleaning house. Based upon current trends, we can look forward to all corruption and wasteful spending to be eliminated within weeks… of hell freezing over.

Two news items today:

From AP – Rep. William Jefferson D-La was indicted Monday on federal charges of racketeering, money-laundering and soliciting more than $400,000 in bribes in a long-running investigation into business deals he tried to broker in Africa.

Will Speaker Pelosi request that he resign from congress? Not that corruption is a real surprise on either side of the aisle, but Pelosi and Reid are trying to “drain the swamp”; so far it appears the are using a swizzle-stick straw. Let’s not forget some of the other pillars of integrity still in congress:

Why Ethics Matter:

Alcee Hastings D-Fl

  • Alcee Hastings was accused (although not convicted) of taking a bribe in a perjury trial
  • He was impeached by a Democrat House and removed from the bench by the Senate
  • He is millions of dollars in debt, which leaves him vulnerable to another bribe

And yet, according to his official website:

Congressman Hastings is a member of the powerful House Rules Committee and is a senior Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI). On the HPSCI, Hastings is the Ranking Democratic Member of the Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security. The Terrorism Subcommittee is the primary committee in Congress which has direct oversight of the programs and activities of the intelligence community that relate to U.S. homeland security and to counterterrorism, including capabilities, resources, policies and procedures.

As a Senior Democratic Whip, Hastings is an influential member of the Democratic Leadership. The Congressman also serves as one of only four House Democrats on the U.S. Helsinki Commission.

John Murtha D-PA

Listed among his credentials: He’s the only congressman snared in the 1980 Abscam sting who was not indicted.

Follow the above link to a long write-up of his involvement with Abscam… too much to reprint here.

And item #2:

From AP - After promising unprecedented openness regarding Congress’ pork barrel practices, House Democrats are moving in the opposite direction as they draw up spending bills for the upcoming budget year.

Democrats are sidestepping rules approved their first day in power in January to clearly identify “earmarks” — lawmakers’ requests for specific projects and contracts for their states — in documents that accompany spending bills.

I suppose ethics sound like a much better idea when in the heat of an election campaign then they do when you have to live with them, so who can blame the Dems for not wasting a lot of time and breaking their promises at the beginning of this congressional session.

Feds foil JFK terror plot; ABC News issues apology

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

While the NY Times issued a terse “no comment” following the revelation that the US had disrupted a terror plot to blow up JFK airport, ABC News issued an apology to their viewers:

ABC News has, as a core objective, a commitment to report accurate and timely information about federal investigations and undercover operations.  Today’s announcement that the federal government had been conducting secret operations to foil a plot to bomb JFK airport highlights the harsh reality that ABC News is underprepared and understaffed to uncover every potential federal operation before it can reach a successful conclusion. While we can point to successes such as the CIA operations in Iran, it only takes one of these plots to get by us unreported for the United States to violate the rights of US citizens and foreign nationals by investigating them under the cover of darkness. ABC News apologizes and pledges to redouble our efforts to expose secret operations both here and abroad.

Rosie O’Donnell provided incredible insight into the situation on her blog today:

Here we go again. President Bush and his secret police set up some poor men with foreign sounding last names, people just like you and me, people who are dads just trying to defend their children, and are making them out to be terrorists. I’ve told you before and I’ll say it again, calling these people terrorists is just how this administration justifies their war for oil in Iraq, Google it. The only thing that was broken up today was another potential government sponsored sacrifice of innocent Americans to drum up support for the war.

OK… so I made it up, but admit it, for one brief second you believed it could be true.

Thank you FBI, NYPD and everyone else involved with this investigation and thank you President Bush for having the courage to stand up to the loons who would strip us of the tools necessary to defend our country under the guise of protecting our rights.

Movie Night – Memories in Song

Friday, June 1st, 2007

Had one of those rare occasions tonight when everyone was home and we sat down to dinner together.. the best kind of dinner too… pizza!

Our daughter, home from college where she pulled a 4.0 this semester (had to slip that in), had me laughing so hard I was in tears. Apparently one of her early childhood memories was of me singing the Unicorn Song to her at bed time while I danced around the room (I have no recollection of this, deny it, and I might add, she has no proof). Well.. what I hadn’t considered at the time was that this song is about the unicorn being left behind by Noah and my daughter couldn’t understand why I was singing her a song that made her sad every night. I never thought of it that way…

Her memory of early childhood, as far back as 2yrs old, is better than my memory of last week. Some of the things she shares, from the perspective of a toddler, are hilarious and fascinating at the same time… but I digress.

After dinner, I did a bit of searching on YouTube and found a couple of the songs that bring back memories for me… perhaps they will do the same for you.  Hope you enjoy…

First up: The Unicorn Song by the Irish Rovers (by the way.. my very bright daughter told me something I didn’t know… this song is based upon a poem by Shel Silverstein)

What I like about this version is the debunking of the old urban legend that this song was about drugs.. Puff the Magic Dragon:

In keeping with tonight’s them.. Kenny Loggins and Return to Pooh Corner.. also, an earlier version with Messina (check out the hair.. I remember having hair…):

Hope you enjoyed Movie Night….
