What’s the opposite of a bully?

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

I’m not talking about the linguistic opposite.. like weakling or something like that.  I’m talking about someone of strength who defends their ideas, defends the right of others to have their own ideas, and does not attempt to crush those who they perceive as inferior.

On the other hand, a bully can look like a defender on the surface, crushing foes in the name of justice, while secretly (or not so secretly) doing so for personal gain, carefully choosing targets that are easily crushed and basking in the praise of adoring fans. Sure, they look strong while on the offensive, but strength is not measured by the fist alone; to truly be strong, you need to be able to take a punch and keep on fighting.

On the other hand, give the bully a good bop on the nose and watch the bravado melt into a pool of tears. Sometimes it doesn’t even take a bop on the nose, just someone with the temerity to look the bully right in the eye and do the unthinkable…

And so it was with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Although I disagree with both (all three? four?) of her answers regarding the issuing of driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, what has been exposed (hopefully) to those of us who have been blinded by adoration for the junior senator from NY, is that HRC can’t take the heat. It was really a simple question that could be answered by just about anyone with a yes or no answer, but it was such a tough question for HRC, she accused Tim Russert of playing “gotcha”.

Here’s a reminder of the “gotcha” moment:

Following this relatively minor slip that could more easily be excused of a person who is less prone to going for the throat when battling with lesser opponents, HRC did what no journalist has been able to accomplish during her senate campaign, years in the senate and now presidential campaign, she exposed herself as nothing more than a paper tiger.

When confronted with the mildest attack, hard to even consider it an attack at all, she turned to her husband, she hid behind her gender, she rallied her troops to protect her, and she showed that she is not prepared to stand up to any questioning, scrutiny, any kind of heat without turning into a victim…   that should work well for the president of the most powerful nation on this planet.

Unfortunately for HRC, her hubby and all the loons are just making it worse by coming to her defense on such a minor event. It reinforces the idea, just starting to form in the national conscience, that if HRC can’t stand up to Tim Russert, what is she going to do when faced with a real challenge.

For example, from Media Matters:

This was perhaps the most illuminating back-and-forth from the debate as Russert clearly badgered Clinton:

RUSSERT: Senator Clinton, would you pledge to the American people that Iran will not develop a nuclear bomb while you are president?

CLINTON: I intend to do everything I can to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb.

RUSSERT: But you won’t pledge?

CLINTON: I am pledging I will do everything I can to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb.

RUSSERT: But, they may.

CLINTON: Well, you know, Tim, you asked me if I would pledge, and I have pledged that I will do everything I can to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb.

[laughter]

Russert asked Clinton if she’d make a pledge. She said yes. Russert pressed her again to make the same pledge, which she did. Then for a third time Russert wanted her to make the pledge again. Clinton cut him off and explained she had answered the question. Then the audience laughed at Russert.

They’re kidding, right? This is badgering? She already answered the question? The answer was pure double-speak.

TR:  …would you pledge to the American people that Iran will not develop a nuclear bomb while you are president?

HRC: I intend to do everything I can to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb

In other words… no.  What exactly does she believe “everything I can” includes?  Talking? Sanctions? Threats?  Would she blow up the installation before it was completed? Would she invade to prevent the building of a nuclear bomb that Iran has promised to use against Israel? Or will she, after the bomb is built, say she did everything she could… oops.. sorry.

Badgering? How about demanding an answer to one of the most important questions any of these candidates can be asked … will you prevent Iran from building a nuclear bomb that would be used against our alies in the region? Answer the question.

There are more examples of panic out there as the Clinton propaganda machine tries to reverse the perceived damage. Unfortunately for them, it may just backfire.

However, this may very well pass, especially if the media backs off and lets the wound heal; but if the media smells blood and can’t resist the temptation to bop her on the nose again, HRC will be a wounded duck if she makes it to the finals.

Oh, and drop on by to read what Taylor Marsh has to say about Tim Russert deciding to “attack her full out”, anyone who would call me a “wingnut” deserves a plug :-)

A shame she proves my point with her defense:

Clinton is getting hammered today, which I predicated, especially on the drivers license question moment, which came at the end of a withering assault from The Boys.

Withering assault?  Please, if you can’t take the heat….

Yellowstone volcano?

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

So… the ground at Yellowstone Park has been rising at a rate of about 3 inches per year for the last three years, leading experts to believe that magma is filling a crustal magma chamber:

From AP: That is more than three times faster than ever observed since such measurements began in 1923, the researchers said.

“Our best evidence is that the crustal magma chamber is filling with molten rock,” Smith said in a statement. “But we have no idea how long this process goes on before there either is an eruption or the inflow of molten rock stops and the caldera deflates again.”

It’s not unusual for ancient volcano sites like Yellowstone and Long Valley, Calif., to rise and fall, according to the researchers.

The Yellowstone volcanic field was produced by what the researchers described as a plume of hot and molten rock beginning at least 400 miles beneath Earth’s surface and rising to 30 miles underground, where it widens to about 300 miles across.

Blobs of molten rock sometimes rise to refill the magma chamber beneath Yellowstone.

The volcano at Yellowstone produced massive eruptions 2 million, 1.3 million and 642,000 years ago, all larger than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.

So I’m thinkin’…  2 million years ago… 1.3 million years ago… 642,000 years ago….   that’s just about a major eruption every 700,000 years.  We’re due!  Sometime in the next 50,000 to 100,000 years, we are going to have a major volcano erupting in the middle of the US… and some Democrat in the year 52,007 is gonna try to blame this on George Bush.

Quick Thought: Driver’s License for Illegal Immigrants

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

Have been listening to some of the fascinating arguments in favor of NY providing driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants.  I think the one that I find to be the most obvious red herring is the “safety” issue.  What we are being asked to believe is that,  by allowing these folks to apply for a driver’s license, the roads will be safer because they will somehow magically become better drivers.

Now, let’s suppose they fail their driving test and don’t get a license, will they suddenly become law abiding citizens and not drive without a license? And if they can drive well enough to get a license, aren’t they already competent enough to drive whether they have a license or not?

The only benefit in the real world to people getting a driver’s license is that people who fail to obtain a license will theoretically not drive.  Since these folks are already driving, passing a simple driving test will either be no problem or not keep them off the road if they fail.

So much for that argument.

Here’s a real safety issue…  providing legitimate identification to illegals that can then be used to obtain other documents, such as a pilot license perhaps? Or, even scarier, a voter registration card… then we would have to deal with even more pro-illegal immigration nuts getting elected.

MSNBC going all in

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

Apparently emboldened by their impressive ratings as a left leaning cable network, MSNBC is thinking of giving Rosie her own show. As a result, the lunatic fringe will finally have a home of their own in primetime.  Wonder if Bill Clinton will be a guest and wag his finger at her with a classic “How dare you…” when she starts channeling the far, far left blogs about 911 being an inside job.

Side note: MSNBC doesn’t even crack the top 30.  Fox News is 5th, CNN is 27th (which makes me wonder why all the doctors offices I go to insist on locking the TV on CNN… wouldn’t it make sense to select a channel folks actually want to watch), the FOOD Network is 26th!!!  CNN and MSNBC can’t even attract as many viewers as the FOOD Network in primetime.

Anyway, back to Rosie.  Some reminder of what we can expect to see from a new Rosie show.  With the freedom that MSNBC is likely to give her to make up anything she wants and present it as fact, it could get even worse:

What were they thinking?

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Check out this article about twins from the Daily Mail, then come on back … I’ll wait.

Amazing!

Doctors were able to save a twin they assumed would die in the womb by cutting the placenta in half to isolate the healthier twin so that the death of the weaker twin would not result in the loss of both babies.  Seems to me they may have stumbled upon a new procedure for allowing twins that are seemingly not co-equals in the womb a chance to survive.

Mrs Jones said: “They thought it may be because the placenta had been divided. Inadvertently, it had evened out the distribution of nutrition between them, allowing Gabriel to survive.’

When Mrs Jones reached 31 weeks doctors carried out a caesarian to deliver the twins. Ieuan weighed 3lb 8oz and Gabriel 1lb 15oz. Both were kept in hospital, but since going home they have thrived. At seven months, Ieuan weighs 15lb and Gabriel 12lb 6oz.

Mrs Jones said: “The boys are so healthy, they have huge appetites too. Ieuan is the noisy one, while Gabriel is always laughing, it’s like he’s just so happy to be here.

“There is such a strong bond between them.

“They are always holding hands and if one cries, the other reaches out to comfort him.”

And to think, the doctors were so sure the weaker twin was going to die, their first course of treatment was to abort this baby by cutting the umbilical cord, but the cord was too strong.  The mother did not want to lose her baby, but the doctors convinced her that the one twin must die to save the other.

What I don’t get is why, with all the sharp toys these doctors had at their disposal to help them play god, none of them was sharp enough to cut through the umbilical cord…  something to think about.
