Did you see this kid on American Idol?

All indications are that 17yr old David Archuleta is a future star. Great vocals, great performance, on a tough song to cover  John Lennon’s “Imagine”…

From week 1:

From two years ago… one of my favorite “Idol” performances… Katharine McPhee - Somewhere Over The Rainbow:

A classic.. Whitney Houston sings our National Anthem:

Philippi Sparks’ kid can belt it out too:

Obama would keep troops in Iraq to fight al Qaeda!

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

News Flash: Obama would keep troops in Iraq… although he doesn’t realize it just yet.

Here’s my thinking on this:

From Reuters:

Obama said during the debate with Clinton that once he withdrew U.S. troops from Iraq, if al Qaeda were to form a base there, “then we will have to act in a way that secures the American homeland and our interests abroad.”

“I have some news,” McCain said. “Al Qaeda is in Iraq. It’s called Al Qaeda in Iraq. My friends, if we left, they wouldn’t be establishing a base, they’d be taking a country and I’m not going to allow that to happen.”

…  Director of National Intelligence Michael McConnell, who told U.S. lawmakers Wednesday that Al Qaeda in Iraq had suffered major setbacks last year and although still “capable of mounting lethal attacks,” the group had suffered hundreds of members killed or captured.

<snip>

“I have some news for John McCain, and that is that there was no such thing as al Qaeda in Iraq until George Bush and John McCain decided to invade Iraq,” he said to cheers.

So let’s boil this down:

  1. As president, Obama would send troops into Iraq to fight al Qaeda
  2. Obama concedes al Qaeda is in Iraq (although he blames Bush for their existence… which seems somewhat moot at the moment)
  3. Therefore… Obama would need to keep troops in Iraq to fight al Qaeda

By the way, why is it bad that we have a place to fight al Qaeda that is not on US soil? Although I do not buy into the theory that al Qaeda was not in Iraq until the war, let’s assume that is true… isn’t that a good thing that our enemy was willing come to the place where we already had our troops in place to fight… seems like it’s working out pretty well. First choice should always be to not have a war, but if we are in a war, seems like it’s better to fight it over there instead of over here… even better than fighting in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Movie Night - Obama

Threw together a quick video for your viewing pleasure… if anyone has a link to another version of Michelle Obama expressing her new found pride in our country without the added modifier “really proud”, please let me know so I can replace the version I found… thanks…

A common sentiment in the Obama household perhaps?

Way to respect the flag and the anthem dude…

Update:  Still looking for that video, but in themeantime, some intersting analysis from Brit Hume:

Update 2:  Found it.. can’t grab it, but you can view it…

Michelle Obama is Proud!

Check out Gina Cobb’s thoughts on the subject of pride in our country.

Sing-a-Long Thursday

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Sung to the tune “Oh Donna” by Ritchie Valens:

O- Bama, O-Bama
O- Bama, O-Bama

I know a guy, Obama is his name
Ev’rything he does, drives Hillary insane
Cause she knows she may never
Be prez, while he’s in the way
he’s in the way

Now that he’s here, she’s not all alone
with nothing to stop her ascention to the throne
‘Cause they love O-Bama
Hillary can’t you see,
Why can’t you see

Obama, blocking her throne, I don’t know, what she’ll do
Oh she, may have to settle, for number two, she’s so blue

I know a guy, Obama is his name
Love how he speaks, though ideas may be lame
Yet he’s taking her crown
“Obama can’t you see, it should be me”

O- Bama, O-Bama
O- Bama, O-Bama
O- Bama, O-Bama
O- Bama, O-Bama

In case you want to sing along:

President Obama?

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Who could have predicted one year ago that Barack Obama would be the front runner for president?

Oh wait…  here’s someone:

From Thinkin’bout Stuff 2/12/2007:

… But Barack Obama is different. This man has a legitimate chance to win his party’s nomination over a somewhat weak field of candidates currently led by another candidate with questionable credentials for the job, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Why?

OK, I admit it, I like the guy. I don’t agree with many of his positions, but he definitely appears to have the charisma to attract followers and presents logical arguments for his positions; but why does that qualify him to be president?…

… But what makes Barack Obama a legitimate contender for the Democrat nomination for president? That’s right, you know it and I know it, it’s because he’s … a celebrity. (You thought I was going to say “African-American” didn’t you?)

You see, we like celebrities in this country; heck, some of us worship them. And yes, his celebrity status is due in no small part to the color of his skin (although that still amazes me that anyone cares what color skin we have…   it’s skin, get over it.) But it is much more than the color of his skin, otherwise we might be discussing Al Sharpton as a serious candidate.

Barack Obama is a communicator; and whether you agree with his positions or not, he is just the kind of candidate who could get elected in this popularity contest we call the Presidential Election. I continue to hope that we will be able to find a president who is qualified to lead and who is prepared to make the tough decisions to ensure the security of our nation; leave the popularity contests to class president and state senator…

The campaign is not yet over, but I fear form over substance is the path we will follow this election year…

Right turn down a dead end?

Just thinkin’…  did HRC make a right turn too early because she thought she had the nomination in the bag and was posturing for the general election?

Vast Winged Conspiracies

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

Could it be the Clintons are now the target of both a vast right wing conspiracy AND a vast left wing conspiracy?

First none of the Dems have the yarbles to debate on Fox, they might ask hard questions don’t you know…

Then HRC whined about tough questions and “gotcha” moments from Tim Russert during a debate in November.

Now David Shuster of MSNBC said something about Chelsea Clinton that was clearly out of line, but is this the response we expect from someone who wants to be president?:

From MSNBC/AP - In a conference call with reporters, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson on Friday excoriated MSNBC’s Shuster and called the comment “beneath contempt” and disgusting. And he said it could threaten Clinton’s participation in a debate later this month on MSNBC and in future debates on the network.

“I, at this point, can’t envision a scenario where we would continue to engage in debates on that network,” Wolfson added.

Seriously? Am I missing something here? Are you running for President of the United States or president of the home and school association? Do you have an obligation to present your case before the American people or is it more important to punish an entire network because of one statement by one anchor?

Should we all follow your lead Senator Clinton? Should we all be offended by your husband’s blatant disdain for the Oval Office and his inappropriate relationship with a young intern? Should we be offended that you lied to the American people about his behavior and blamed everything on a vast right wing conspiracy? And should we then boycott you?

Weeks ago, “Hardball” host Chris Matthews apologized to the former first lady after suggesting her political career had been made possible by her husband’s philandering.

Wonder how many reporters were intimidated into apologizing to any other candidate…

Perhaps cutting a bit too close to the truth Senator? Come on… seriously.  Would anyone have even heard of you if you weren’t married to a president? And would you have gained all of that respect had you not stood by your man? And what about all those sweet deals and favors that funded your ascension to a senate seat?

Denounce what the man said. Defend your daughter. Complain to the network. All justified.  But your Achilles Heal is showing Mrs. Clinton.

If you are elected, let us all hope that no foreign leader makes the mistake of insulting your daughter, the consequences may be devastating.
