Too corny?
I was watching MSNBC a bit today… don’t ask me why. What I found interesting is how the commentators are trying to paint the selection of Palin as a political calculation and a strategy to get votes. Really?
I don’t suppose the Biden selection was politically motivated. No, he wasn’t chosen for his reputation as an attack dog, his perceived ability to “mentor” Obama, his years of experience inside the Beltway… no he was chosen because he would make a great president. In fact, the American people believe in him so much, he has not come close to being nominated in all his attempts to run for president this century and last.
So yes, maybe Palin helps pull in some women voters and sure up conservative votes; and Biden counters some of the concerns about Obama’s lack of experience, accomplishments, wisdom, maturity, etc etc etc…
But Biden also brings years of baggage to the game and was clearly somewhat of a necessary choice, not necessarily the first choice if Obama didn’t need to counter recent attacks on his experience.
Palin, on the other hand, was not a necessary choice, or even a predictable choice, and she does not counter McCain’s negatives. What she does is bring a whole new dimension to the ticket that will create some significant challenges for the Obama-Biden campaign.
For example, the VP debate; Biden can still go on the offensive, but may need to tone down the rabid dog act a bit. Before today, Obama had the whole “history being made” thing all to himself; now he has to share it with Palin. And who is more likely to convince folks that they understand women’s issues, Obama-Biden or McCain-Palin?
So go ahead and claim this is all about politics… politics usually is…
