As apologies go that was lame
Not what I’d call an apology.
For those who haven’t been paying attention to the despicable comments by Former DNC Chairman Don Fowler:
From ABCNews: “The hurricane’s going to hit New Orleans about the time they start. The timing is — at least it appears now that it’ll be there Monday. That just demonstrates that God’s on our side. [Laughter] Everything’s cool.”
His apology, also from ABCNews:
“If this offended anybody, I personally apologize,” Fowler told ABC News. “It was a mistake, and it was a satirical statement made in jest. And one that I clearly don’t believe.”
“One doesn’t anticipate that one’s private conversation will be surreptitiously taped by some right-wing nutcase,” said Fowler. “But that’s the nature of what we’re dealing with.”
How about something like: “I apologize, it was a dumb thing to say, even in jest and I should have been more sensitive to the situation.”
That’s an apology I can respect.
Here’s what Fowler’s apology sounds like: If it offended anyone (implying that it is unlikely that it did), well then I’m sorry, but it wasn’t my fault. It was a private conversation (guess he thought he was on a private jet?) and it’s all part of a vast right-wing conspiracy.
Fowler also tried to pass this off as satire, poking fun at the late Rev Jerry Falwell. Really? Guess we missed that reference and, silly us, thought you were referring to how this will ruin the RNC convention since you pointed out “everything’s cool”.
I’m willing to buy that the reference to God was intended to poke fun at Falwell, but that’s not the part I find offensive.
Frankly, your apology does not even address what I find offensive in your behavior. Setting aside the tongue-in-cheek remark about God being on your side, what I find offensive is the apparent humor you find in a potential tragedy benefiting your candidate.
That is sad, and that can not be explained away with references to Falwell… that is all about winning being the only thing.
Stumble it!
