Time for Congress to get our House in Order

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Speaker of the House.

Second in the line of succession to the presidency behind the Vice President.

Most powerful person in the House of Representatives.

A person who needs political instincts, diplomatic skills, and an understanding of when to push a political agenda and when to put our country first.

Nancy Pelosi has none of these qualities.  Oh sure, she is a master of partisan politics, but she only has one trick.  Wind her up, point her at a camera and watch her spin.  A politician with good political instincts knows how to share enough credit to get things done; Pelosi can only share credit up to a point and then she must assign blame; she just can’t help herself.  It’s her nature.

Reminds of the Scorpion & The Frog
(abridged/adapted version -

A scorpion stood by a wide stream searching for a way to cross that would not end in disaster when she spied, out of the corner of her eye, a frog she had often thought little of, usually ignoring him except for an occasional snicker or sneer.

Hey froggy, she said, I’m thinking of crossing this river but I’m not inclined to try on my own.  Everything would be better for both of us if we could just get across this river, so how about you and me cross together, me on your back the whole way.

Well, froggy wasn’t really so sure that was a good idea, but he also new the scorpion could kill him on the spot if she wanted to and maybe this would be a good time to cooperate.

So, they set off together across the river, froggy carrying scorpion on his back. Just before they reached the safety of the opposite shore, scorpion stabbed froggy in the back, injecting venom until froggy was unable to move and started to sink.

“Why”, froggy asked, “why did you sting me when you knew we would both drown? What were you thinking.”

“I wasn’t thinking”, she said, “I could not help myself… it’s my nature.”

In the real world, froggy and scorpion get to live to fight another day, but pretty safe to assume froggy won’t be giving scorpion anymore rides.

Which brings us back to the point of this post…

The House needs a new Speaker.  On the first day of the new session, House Republicans need to be prepared to reach across the aisle to conservative and moderate Democrats to replace Pelosi with a member, obviously a Democrat, who is more inclined to work in cooperation with opponents to serve the best interest of this country.

Pelosi’s version of a non-partisan approach to leading in a national crises

Monday, September 29th, 2008

What the hell was she thinking?  Everyone is trying to make this a non-partisan, best interest of the country, let’s all work to pass this thing, effort by the House.

Right before the vote, Nancy Pelosi decides to go on the attack?  Is she crazy or did she want this to fail.

From FoxNews:

$700 billion. A staggering number. But only a part of the cost of the failed Bush economic policies to our country. Policies that were built on budget recklessness, when President Bush took office, he inherited President Clintons surpluses four years in a row, budget surpluses. On a trajectory of $5.6 trillion in surplus. And with his reckless economic policies, within two years, he had turned that around. Now eight years later, the foundation of that fiscal irresponsibility, combined with an anything goes economic policy, has taken us to where we are today. They claim to be free market advocates when its really an anything goes mentality. No regulation, no supervision, no discipline. And if you fail, you will have a golden parachute and the taxpayer will bail you out. Those days are over. The party is over.

For too long this government, eight years, has followed a right-wing ideology of anything goes, no supervision, no discipline, no regulation.

Before long we will have a new Congress, a new President of the United States, and we will be able to take our country in a new direction.

I don’t know if this is a good bill or not, I really don’t.  But I do know that is no way to work together with colleagues to close the deal.

Nancy Pelosi has been the absolute worst Speaker of the House in my lifetime.

Oops! House Rejects Bailout

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Now what?

Not sure if it had any impact, but some are saying Pelosi’s partisan approach, and speech on the House floor before the vote, may have swayed some votes to the “no” column.

I’m not sure if this bill is a good thing or not… but assuming it is, couldn’t she behave like an adult just for a few moments and put our country ahead of politics.

UPDATE: House Rebublican leadership now pointing to Pelosi’s partisan speech as a key factor in sinking the bill.

Update #2: Pelosi is blaming House Republicans saying dems held up there end… interesting since they only needed 12 more votes to pass it and 94 Democrats voted against it… seems like Nancy had enough votes if she could only convince 12 more of her fellow Democrats this was the right bill to vote for… but this is the Republican’s fault…   tough case to argue.

Kudos to Barney Fran, speaking right now, who actually is reaching out, not assigning blame for the defeat (for the most part) and indicating he is ready to get back to work.  Barney Frank is not my favorite Congressman by a long stretch, but Pelosi & co should follow his lead from the perspective of acting like an adult, if they want to get this passed.

Although now he is deflecting all blame from Pelosi for her partisan attack on the House floor and blaming the Republicans for not voting yes because they got their feelings her… totally missing the point.  Pelosi should have just kept her mouth shut.  When you extend your hand in the spirit of cooperation and are greated by a claw, you will recoil.

Obama helped author and supports the bailout?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Was getting ready to post this when I heard about the House rejecting the bailout… The Dems could have passed this bill without a single Republican vote… let’s see if they try to blame this all on the Rebublicans.

So.. back to the original post, did Obama help bring this bill to the table, does he know what’s in it, does he support it?

Hard to tell from this video clip:

Clearly I need to work on the titles …  looked a lot better before I posted it :-)

Will fix it later.

Election 2008: The OJ Effect?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I’ve been thinking about the apparent increase in deliberate voter registration fraud and wondering what changed, what is different today that might be contributing to folks justifying, in their minds, a concerted effort to illegally sway the election in 2008.

Then it occurred to me: The OJ Effect.

Only this time, although there may be a racial component, the genesis of the effect was the “stolen elections” of 2000 and 2004.

I believe most people try to do the right things for the right reasons.  But when a group, whether defined by race, gender or ideology, believes they have been wronged over a period of time, true or not, pressure to do the wrong thing for the “right reasons” will increase.

The justification for doing the wrong thing is reinforced by the us-vs-them mentality that is fueled by the echo chamber of the blogosphere.  Essentially, “if we don’t do something they will steal the election again”… I’m sure we’ve all heard that at least once this election cycle.

In this case, the “right reason” is to combat the evil Republican machine that stole two elections that were clear slam-dunks for the Democrats.  How can it be that a Republican like George Bush got elected … twice?!  Something really stinks here.  We can’t let them steal another election from us.  We need to take our country back.

Sound familiar?

I often wonder: take our country back from whom?

As illogical as that sounds to folks outside the group, inside the group it makes total sense.  So much sense, in fact, there are actually sub-groups within these groups who are convinced… convinced that George Bush was behind 9/11.

If you believe that, if you believe elections have been stolen from you, if you believe you have been wronged and that you are doing the right thing for the sake of the country you love… then why not fight fire with fire… why not even the playing field…

Why not ensure your team has more players even if you need to cheat a little bit.

After all, it’s the right thing to do for the right reason … all it takes is a bit of adjusting in our perception of right and wrong.

Update: A post over at Patriot Room dovetails somewhat with this post.

AP is kidding, right?

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

In an amazing display of investigative journalism, Brett J. Blackledge at AP uncovered the following shocking news about then mayor Sarah Palin:

She gladly accepted gifts from merchants: A free “awesome facial” she raved about in a thank-you note to a spa. The “absolutely gorgeous flowers” she received from a welding supply store. Even fresh salmon to take home.

She also stepped in to help friends or neighbors with City Hall dealings. She asked the City Council to add a friend to the list of speakers at a 2002 meeting — and then the friend got up and asked them to give his radio station advertising business.

They’re kidding, right?  This is news.  Digging into Obama’s relationship with Rezko, ACORN, Ayers… not a big enough deal for the super sleuths at AP… but a mayor receiving a facial and flowers…  ewww, let’s appoint a special prosecutor.

But wait, thre’s more:

Some of her first actions after being elected mayor in 1996 raised possible ethical red flags: She cast the tie-breaking vote to propose a tax exemption on aircraft when her father-in-law owned one, and backed the city’s repeal of all taxes a year later on planes, snow machines and other personal property. She also asked the council to consider looser rules for snow machine races. Palin and her husband, Todd, a champion racer, co-owned a snow machine store at the time.

Oh my goodness, mercy me.

To be fair, Blackledge did include the following…. as the LAST THREE FREAKIN PARAGRAPHS IN THE ARTICE!!!!!

James Svara, professor of public affairs at Arizona State University and author of “The Ethics Primer for Public Administrators in Government and Nonprofit Organizations,” suggested such behavior is part of small-town politics.

“Small towns are first-person politics, and if people are close, it’s hard to separate one’s own personal interest and one’s own personal property from the work of the city,” Svara said. The key questions from an ethics standpoint include whether the politician makes a potential conflict of interest known and removes himself or herself from actions related to it, he added.

“I think in a small town there is a greater likelihood that people will accept that you will pay careful attention to friends and neighbors,” he said, adding that there may be some local gossip about it, but not a lot of public scrutiny. “At the national level, there will be far more people watching, there will be far more pressures to come forward to try to influence the outcome.”

If Palin’s record as a mayor is fair game for MSM like AP, then why isn’t Obama’s partnership with Ayers, his association with ACORN, his relationship with Rezko?

For example, a search on “Rezko” finds 3 AP articles about Sarah Palin, a couple with headlines about the Illinois senate, and one article with the following:

AP - McCain’s ad begins, “Barack Obama: Born of the corrupt Chicago political machine.” That’s an inaccurate statement - Obama wasn’t a machine candidate in the state Senate or in the U.S. Senate primary. However, he has been backed by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and other establishment Democrats since he got the Senate nomination in 2004 and has worked with them since being elected.

The ad goes on to list establishment Democrats and their connection to Obama - some stronger than others.

It is true that Obama’s fundraiser Tony Rezko is a convicted felon. And his political mentor, state Senate President Emil Jones, has an array of relatives with state jobs, arranged for his son to take over his Senate seat next year and has dragged his feet on ethics legislation.

Obama did endorse his fellow Illinois Democrat Gov. Rod Blagojevich for re-election despite questions about his ethics, but the two are not particularly close. It’s also true that William Daley has been an adviser. But it’s not surprising Obama would seek economic advice from a former Commerce secretary.

The article is about attack ads, barely mentions Rezko, and is essentially written as a defense of Obama.

Why not dig a little deeper into the Rezko-Obama relationship then simply mentioning he is a fundraiser for Obama and a convicted felon:

From Wiki - Starting in 2003, Rezko was one of the people on Obama’s U.S. Senate campaign finance committee, which raised more than $14 million. Rezko threw an early fundraiser for Obama, which Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendelland claims was instrumental in providing Obama with seed money for his U.S. Senate race. Obama has since identified over $250,000 in campaign contributions to various Obama campaigns as coming from Rezko or close associates, and has claimed to have donated almost two thirds of that amount to charity.

Also, in 2005 Obama purchased a new home in the Kenwood District of Chicago for $1.65 million (which was $300,000 below the asking price but represented the highest offer on the property) on the same day that Rezko’s wife, Rita Rezko, purchased the adjoining empty lot from the same sellers for the full asking price. Obama acknowledged bringing his interest in the property to Rezko’s attention, but denied any coordination of offers. According to Obama, while the properties had originally been a single property, the previous owners decided to sell the land as two separate lots, but made it a condition of the sales that they be closed on the same date. Obama also claimed that the properties had been on the market for months, that his offer was the best of two bids, and that Ms. Rezko’s bid was matched by another offer, also of $625,000, so that she could not have purchased the property for less. Obama’s description of the purchase was later confirmed by the previous owner of the house.

After it had been reported in 2006 that Rezko was under federal investigation for influence-peddling, Obama purchased a 10 foot (3.0 m) wide strip of Ms. Rezko’s property for $104,500, $60,000 above the assessed value. According to Chicago Sun-Times columnist, Mark Brown, “Rezko definitely did Obama a favor by selling him the 10-foot strip of land, making his own parcel less attractive for development.” Obama acknowledges that the exchange may have created the appearance of impropriety, and stated “I consider this a mistake on my part and I regret it.”

<SNIP>

In June 2007, the Sun-Times published a story about letters Obama had written in 1997 to city and state officials in support of a low-income senior citizen development project headed by Rezko and partner Allison Davis. The project received more than $14 million in taxpayer funds, including $885,000 in development fees for Rezko and Davis. Of Obama’s letters in support of the Cottage View Terrace apartments development, Obama spokesman Bill Burton said, “This wasn’t done as a favor for anyone, it was done in the interests of the people in the community who have benefited from the project. I don’t know that anyone specifically asked him to write this letter nine years ago. There was a consensus in the community about the positive impact the project would make and Obama supported it because it was going to help people in his district.” Rezko’s attorney responded that “Mr. Rezko never spoke with, nor sought a letter from, Senator Obama in connection with that project.

Now I know what you’re thinking… Obama’s relationship to a man convicted on six counts of wire fraud, six counts of mail fraud, two counts of corrupt solicitation, and two counts of money laundering does not reach the level of Palin accepting flowers and a facial, but I just thought you should know anyway.

But seriously… this is what I found on Wikipedia.. don’t you think AP’s time would be well spent digging a bit deeper here?  Isn’t this at least as important as Palin supporting the roll-back of taxes on planes when her father-in-law owned a plane or Palin being given some Salmon?

Hold on to your wallets folks

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Just heard Nancy Pelosi say “Charlie Rangel helped us a great deal on the House side from the Ways and Means committee”.

Oh good, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Charlie Rangel with their hands in our pockets… scary in more ways than one, but let’s not go there… let’s focus on money… no not that kind of money… taxpayer money.

Rangel is currently trying to answer charges of ethics violations that might still be spreading.

As far as Frank and Dodd’s credibility on the subject, and whether we should believe anything they say or do is in our best interest:

Hartford Courant 9/14/2008- Sen. Christopher Dodd, the Democratic chairman of the Senate banking committee, has the gall to say in a Bloomberg Television interview: “I have a lot of questions about where was the administration over the last eight years.”We will save the senator some trouble. Here is what we saw firsthand at the White House from late 2002 through 2007: Starting in 2002, White House and Treasury Department economic policy staffers, with support from then-Chief of Staff Andy Card, began to press for meaningful reforms of Fannie, Freddie and other government-sponsored enterprises, known GSEs.

The crux of their concern was this: Investors believed that the GSEs were government-backed, so shouldn’t the GSEs also be subject to meaningful government supervision?

This was not the first time a White House had tried to confront this issue. During the Clinton years, Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Treasury official Gary Gensler both spoke out on the issue of Fannie and Freddie’s investment portfolios, which had already begun to resemble hedge funds with risky holdings. Nor were others silent: As chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan regularly warned about the risks posed by Fannie and Freddie’s holdings.

President Bush was receptive to reform. He withheld nominees for Fannie and Freddie’s boards - a presidential privilege. While it would have been valuable politically to use such positions to reward supporters, the president put good policy above good politics.

<SNIP>

During this period, Sen. Richard Shelby led a small group of legislators favoring reform, including fellow Republican Sens. John Sununu, Chuck Hagel and Elizabeth Dole. Meanwhile, Dodd - who along with Democratic Sens. John Kerry, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were the top four recipients of Fannie and Freddie campaign contributions from 1988 to 2008 - actively opposed such measures and further weakened existing regulation.

 <SNIP>

How did Fannie and Freddie counter such efforts? They flooded Washington with lobbying dollars, doled out tens of thousands in political contributions and put offices in key congressional districts. Not surprisingly, these efforts worked. Leaders in Congress did not just balk at proposals to rein in Fannie and Freddie. They mocked the proposals as unserious and unnecessary.

As recently as last summer, when housing prices had clearly peaked and the mortgage market had started to seize up, Dodd called on Bush to “immediately reconsider his ill-advised” reform proposals. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said that the president’s suggestion for a strong, independent regulator of Fannie and Freddie was “inane.”

One wonders how Barney Frank is even still in congress years after a scandal that would seem at least as big as the Mark Foley Scandal of 2006 that led to Foley’s forced resignation:

WAPO August 27, 1989 - Prostitute and pimp Stephen L. Gobie settled in with his “girls” in his Georgetown town house one evening in late 1987 to watch “The Mayflower Madam” on television. As Candice Bergen portrayed upscale madam Sydney Biddle Barrows, Gobie’s companions had an idea.

“The girls turned to me and said, ‘You’re just like her,’ ” Gobie recalled in an interview yesterday. “That’s when I realized that I was in the middle of a developing story that could be worth something someday. I told them, ‘One day, don’t be surprised if you see me on TV.’ “

Gobie’s dream has come true. His accusation that Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) knew that Gobie had operated a prostitution service out of Frank’s Capitol Hill apartment became national news after it was first reported Friday by the Washington Times.

Frank, one of two openly gay members of Congress, confirmed Friday that he paid Gobie for sex, hired him with personal funds as an aide and wrote letters on congressional stationery on his behalf to Virginia probation officials, but Frank said he fired Gobie when he learned that clients were visiting the apartment.

<SNIP>

Then in his third term, the 45-year-old representative had not yet stated his homosexuality publicly. He paid Gobie $80 in cash for sex.

<SNIP>

Gobie and Frank say they became more friends than sexual partners. Gobie says he attended a bill-signing at the White House, and helped coach and played left field for Frank’s team in the Congressional Softball League. “I was the star player,” Gobie said.

Frank began to help Gobie financially, paying his attorney and court-ordered psychiatrist. The House member also said he hired Gobie as a personal aide, housekeeper and driver, but Gobie said that was a “cover story” concocted for probation officers.

In late 1985, Gobie says, he began to use Frank’s apartment and two other locations for prostitution. Frank knew about the prostitution all along, but it was never explicitly discussed, Gobie says.

“He knew exactly what I was doing,” Gobie said. “It was pretty obvious. If he had to come home early {from work}, he would call home to be sure the coast was clear . . . . He was living vicariously through me. He said it was kind of a thrill, and if he had been 20 years younger he might be doing the same thing.”

Guess when Pelosi drained the swamp she saw the sludge and it was good.

One other thought… Pelosi had no use for House Republicans for nearly two years, doing everything imaginable to block them from participating in the legislative process.  Now suddenly, she wants us to believe she couldn’t possible move this bailout forward without their cooperation … that’s BS…  she wanted to make sure any fallout from this bill would be pinned to Republicans as well as Democrats.

While she is spinning this as a Republican problem with a Democrat led solution, she now has the option of spinning it as a “bipartisan” solution if there is a backlash.
