Quick thoughts on recent items in the news

Friday, December 19th, 2008

From AP:

Oil drops below $34 to lowest level in almost 5 years

I know this is largely due to the worldwide economic downturn, but I hope we all keep our consumption habits in check as if oil prices were at $150…  the less money flowing from here to there the better… let them drink their precious oil or bath in it… if they want to cut production to raise the price, we should cut consumption even more wherever possible.  Plan trips to stores to avoid multiple trips in a week; have oil heat? Knock down the thermostat one degree if you can, probably won’t even notice the change; use synthetic oil in your car;  I’ve heard of folks, who would never have considered public transportation in the past, changing their thinking when the prices were up… we should keep that mindset because, if we don’t, the price will just go up again.  I’m sure you can think of other ways to keep consumption (and demand) down.

From AP:

Iraqi judge says shoe-tossing reporter was beaten

You throw two  shoes at me and I’ll beat the crap out of you too.  Yeah.. that’s the headline, the guy assault the President of the United States and the headline is he may have been beaten.

Folks have been discussing the punishment for this guy.  My initial thinking was he should be tried, convicted, and given a suspended sentence.  That way it’s on his record but he’s not in jail for two years for throwing shoes.

But now that some idiots are pointing to this as some sort of great thing I think there needs to be some example made, although two years does seem harsh for throwing shoes.  But he was clearly trying to harm the president and that can not be minimized because of how ridiculous the whole situation appeared on camera.

I have usually focused on President Bush’s reaction while watching the video.  The way he reacted made the situation appear less serious to me, but last night I focused on the attacker and tried to not look at the president at all.  I found it interesting that I had a different reaction when I focused my attention exclusively on this guy violently hurling shoes knowing full well he was gonna get taken down.

Bottom line – he either needs to be punished or he’s a nut and needs to get locked up and placed under the care of some kind of mental health professional.

From AP:

Bailout approved: Automakers to get $17.4B

You can tell folks think this is a good thing because the headline doesn’t read “Bush bails out automakers”.

The article talks about tough concessions that needed to be made by the auto industry to get this bail out.  Hopefully those concessions are focused on actually getting these companies to be healthy competitors in the marketplace because $17.4B isn’t going to keep them floating forever.

Also, good to see we are slipping further and further into a socialist economy as we start buying partial stakes in private industry with tax payer dollars.

From AP:

Ill. Gov. Blagojevich to make statement

Probably won’t be quite as interesting as the statements he made when he thought no one was listening.

From AP:

Franken opens first lead in Minn. Senate race

I know this is probably temporary, but even if Franken loses, the fact that this race is so close makes me have to ask the people of Minnesota:  What the hell were you thinking?  Maybe we should elect Michael Moore president, appoint Ralph Nader Sec of Defense, tap one of the folks from NAMBLA to head the Department of Health and Human Services…

Franken as senator (shaking head in disbelief), next the Dems will be wanting to appoint someone with no real experience, who happens to have a famous last name, a senator from New York over thousands of much more qualified people.

Which leads to another thought…  millions upon millions of people in this country… why do we keep tapping the same DNA pool over and over again for leaders?  It’s clearly not because they are more qualified than other folks.  Can we find someone other than a Bush, Clinton or Kennedy.  Maybe we need to extend term limits to families.  Two terms as and individual, three per family in any given 25 year period… something like that.

Just thinkin’ …

Obama quitting smoking? Is that a good idea?

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Aside from adding to the list of little white lies Obama told during his campaign, shocking simply because he is the most honest man walking the face of this Earth and is unquestionably on a mission from god second only to that of the Blues Brothers, this whole smoking thing is getting blown out of proportion and may lead to something we will regret:  Obama trying to quit while president.

From AP:

But recent attention to Obama’s on-and-off smoking habit has pinned a new kind of audacious hope to him. Anti-smoking advocates are counting on Obama as a role model for others trying to kick the habit, showing them – and himself – that while it’s hard, all things are indeed possible in America.

More pressure? One imagines the very thought might send Obama back to the privacy of his yard to light up. In seriousness, though, his familiar plight – a former smoker who says he’s quit, but admittedly falls off the wagon – is potentially “the ultimate teachable moment,” as one anti-smoking advocate puts it.

<snip>

One common reaction to Obama’s smoking is that it’s a mystifying contradiction to the rest of his personality – to the famous discipline that keeps him working out every single day, and helped him run one of the more successful campaigns in U.S. politics.

Jorenby says such logic is a fallacy. “They’re not mutually exclusive,” he says of discipline and smoking. For one thing, a cigarette often helps smokers concentrate – one reason it’s so hard to stop. “The thought of not being able to think clearly is terrifying to them,” he says.

We should all be thankful that he appears to have quit cocaine and marijuana, why are we looking to take away his cigs at a time when he is starting one of the most stressful jobs in America?

If he had quit for real years before,  great!  If he wants to quit 4 years from now after he leaves office, fantastic!  But now?  I’m not sure that’s such a great idea.

I know, it sets a bad example, it’s bad for his health, he’ll have to stand outside the White House to smoke…

But weigh that against having a smoker in withdrawal dealing with the pressures of being president… not a good idea.

Besides, if setting a good example was important, perhaps he shouldn’t have joked about his drug use as if it was no big deal, hung around with a known terrorist, chosen a racist minister as a mentor, supported a crook for governor, or repeatedly lied during his two year run for president.

Oh sure… let’s put all that stuff behind us.  We shouldn’t hold such trivial stuff against such a great man.  But smoking?  Unconscionable!

Side note:  Just noticed that Ron Rosenbaum on Slate.com expressed a similar sentiment two days ago… I thought I might be alone in this view.

Gas down, but folks still not buying it

Friday, December 12th, 2008

From Thinkin’bout Stuff 11/22/2008

By the way, I wonder if gas prices finally hit the tipping point earlier this year.  Did they go high enough that we actually will see a long-term change in consumption habits?  If so, the oil guys shot themselves in the foot because it will take a dramatic drop in prices ($1.25/gal maybe?) to reverse that trend.  Like I said, just wondering…

From AP:

Federal Highway Administration data released Friday show the number of miles driven dropped 3.5 percent in October compared with the same month a year ago. Between November 2007, when the driving decline began, and October, Americans drove 100 billion fewer miles. That’s the largest continuous decline in driving the nation has experienced.

Gas prices averaged $3.15 a gallon in October, down from a high of $4.09 in July, according to the Energy Information Administration.

“The fact that the trend persists even as gas prices are dropping confirms that America’s travel habits are fundamentally changing,” Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said in a statement.

Prices obviously dropped even further in November, so it will be interesting to see if this trend continues.

While driving declined, subways, buses, commuter rail and light-rail systems have reported record increases in ridership.

Which appears to support my contention  in an earlier post that not all driving, or more specifically commuting, is out of necessity and we can do more to help extricate ourselves from the grip of foreign oil.

Peters expressed concern that the decline in driving is widening a gap between federal gas tax revenues and the government’s commitments to fund state and local highway repair and construction projects. Congress made an emergency infusion of $8 billion earlier this year from the general treasury to cover an expected shortfall in the fund.

“As driving decreases and vehicle fuel efficiency continues to improve, the long-term viability of the Highway Trust Fund grows weaker,” Peters said.

Oops…  maybe we need to increase the tax, which will help fund the Highway Trust as well as energy initiatives and homeland security while ensuring the price stays at a level that keeps consumption down and discourages OPEC from raising prices…  just thinking.

I know, I know… everyone says I’m nuts and raising taxes in a downturn is a sure path to a depression.  I disagree.  If the market will support higher prices, they will go up;  better that the money stay  here (in the form of a tax to fund energy research and homeland security) and we minimize consumption until we either wake up and drill more domestically or we find an alternative.

Disagree?  Fair enough…  share your thoughts on how we can free ourselves.

Sgt Shultz has nothing on Obama

So… is Obama lying about his knowledge of the behavior and shady activities of all of his associates, or is he really that clueless about what is going on around him.

Either way, pretty damn scary.

I’m expecting to hear Obama say, any day now:

“Blagojevich was not part of my campaign, he is not someone I associate with.  He is just the governor of the state I happen to live in and frankly have not even visited much in the past two years.   Just as with Rev. Wright, who just happens to be the pastor of a church I attended on occasion, Ayers and Farrakhan who are just guys who live in the same neighborhood, and Rezko who is just some guy who sold me some property, I strongly denounce the actions of Governor Blagojevich and any other persons, politician or otherwise, that I have never really known, including but not limited to the entire population of Chicago”.

Please remember…

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

… as we fight the crowds to shop for family and friends, sit at home in front of the TV or read a good book by the fire, snuggle up to those we love or share a meal at our favorite diner… please remember when we hear the laughter of children playing or are blessed enough to have a child or grandchild to get big hugs from…

Please remember the men and women serving our country overseas, fighting over there to keep us safe over here, away from family, away from simple comforts, away from the land they love, and pray for their safe return, because somewhere there is a husband, wife, significant other, mom, dad, sister, brother, or child who loves and misses them very much:

Come out, come out, wherever you are…

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Election is over, and Obama’s buds are crawling out from under the rocks they’ve been hiding under.

Ayers is giving interviews again, explaining he just planted little bombs; Wright is spewing hate from the pulpit again (didn’t he retire?); and now soon to be former Governor Blagojevich of Illinois has been caught on tape trying to sell Obama’s senate seat, among other things.

Surprised?

Then you really haven’t been paying attention.  Obama’s climb to the presidency is firmly rooted in Chicago politics and Chicago politics is all about payoffs, influence peddling and strong arming.

“If Illinois isn’t the most corrupt state in the United States, it sure is one hell of a the competitors,” said the head of the FBI’s Chicago office, Robert Grant.

It’s as if America, thirsting for hope and change, anticpating a refreshing drink from the spring that is Obama,  is just now realizing the source is a cesspool in the heart of Illinois; the media ain’t got a big enough filter to make me drink.

One thing we may never know: if the FBI hadn’t acted now, would this have been smothered as soon as Obama took office in January.  One thing we can be certain of: a pardon somewhere down the road for all the Obama buds.

Should be an interesting four years…
