My senator, Arlen Specter, apparently has decided to vote for the enormous spending bill that is being blasted through congress in the guise of a stimulus package.
Any power, influence or authority Republicans might have in congress is essentially limited to acts that require complete unity of purpose to block bad legislation via filibuster; give that up, and they have about as much influence as a sand castle against the tide.
It only takes a few Republicans breaking ranks to turn the entire caucus into high paid seat warmers. So if my senator believes the Democrats are doing the right thing for our country, assuming he runs again and wins his primary, I might as well vote for a Democrat next time… at least that way we can all stop playing make believe.
And I love the rationalization offered by Sen. Susan Collins:
FoxNews – “Well, I know that some of my Republican colleagues are unhappy with the position that I’ve taken,” Collins told FOX News on Saturday. “I hope they will look at the fact that we were able to cut $110 billion of unnecessary spending from this bill. I think that’s a good accomplishment. I also think that it’s important that we do pass a stimulus bill to help turn the economy around.”
Wow! She hopes they realize that they were able to cut $110b out of it before folding.
I guess all of the Republicans, if they had her insight and wisdom, should also vote for this because this is clearly a major victory that they were able to get this major spending bill, with tons of Democratic pet projects piggy-backing on what should be an emergency stimulus bill… they were able to reduce this bill to the amazing low, low price of only $827b… that’s $827,000,000,000.00 folks.
But wait, if you act now, they will throw in free shipping and a pole to stick up your butt so you can truly feel the effects of this bill.
No need to pay now, just sign on the dotted line and we can make 120 equal payments of only $7billion dollars per month… plus interest.
Let me say that again… it will take us 10 years paying 7-billion dollars a month to pay this money back even if we don’t pay interest!!!!!!!!
That’s a freakin’ bargain! Thank you Senator Snowe! Thank you Senator Collins! Thank you Senator Specter! You truly are looking out for us!
