No sirree, Obama’s not a socialist, not at all

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

OK, I get that Obama and many in Congress believe that the government should have a role in determining the compensation of employees of companies that they purchased with taxpayer money.  Some logic there.  But here comes the proverbial slippery slope we often hear about.

From Fox News:

The Obama administration will call for increased oversight of executive pay at all banks, Wall Street firms and possibly other companies as part of a plan to overhaul financial regulation, the New York Times reported.

Obama is expected to announce the plan, which officials said would include a broad new role for the Fed to oversee large companies, ahead of the G-20 summit in early April.

If our government can regulate compensation for banks and insurance companies partially owned by the government, why not banks and insurance companies that did not get bailout money?  After all, best to have a say in these companies too since clearly they are out of control and it’s only a matter of time before we’ll need to bail them out.  Plus, it levels the playing field, right?

You know, this oversight thing looks like a great idea… why limit ourselves to banks and insurance companies.  There is so much greed on Wall Street we need to make sure their employees are not getting way overpaid.  After all, someone needs to make sure compensation is fair and equitable.

But now we have a problem, don’t we.  Doesn’t seem fair to target one sector of the economy… no, not fair at all.

Nope, as much as it pains us to admit it, we can not trust any of the greedy, money grabbing corporations to determine compensation for their employees.  Clearly, the time has come for a national pay scale, set by Congress and enforced by our federal government.  Never again will the hard workers of American be forced into virtual slavery to enrich the elite who do nothing but stuff their pockets while stepping on the fallen heroes of our economy.

But, there are so many companies it would be nearly impossible to provide oversight solely from Washington, and that’s where the unions come in.  We will take full advantage of the unions to be the eyes and ears of the federal government.  Since this will require that every company be unionized so that no stone is left unturned, henceforth all companies granted the privilege of operating within the borders of this great country will be required to unionize, no exceptions.

Then and only then will the Democratic Republic of America be a fair country where all citizens truly have an equal opportunity to share in prosperity and the happiness that comes from the truths that are self evident, that all are created equal and to each an equal share.

Update:  Right after posting this article, saw this on the Fox News website:

“We have to level the playing field,” Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, told “FOX News Sunday,” about the decision to tax executive bonuses at 90 percent at firms getting federal bailout funds.

Ah… there we have it.. we must level the playing field.

Congratulations, looks like you got your class war.. well done!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Has it really come to this?

People who wouldn’t get off their asses to protest earmarks and pork spending by congress that far exceeds the AIG bonuses are ready to attack the “greedy rich people” who have the nerve to accept a bonus that fulfills the obligation of a contract they signed.

Some idiotic senators and representatives grab a mic and point a damning finger at these true enemies of the state and some of us are ready to get out the pitch forks and torches.

From AP:  AIG bonus outrage has employees living in fear

Pillars of the community are now pariahs fearing for their safety in a ritzy area of Connecticut home to many executives at American International Group Inc., hit with a backlash over bonuses it paid to top brass even as it accepted federal bailout money.

The payouts to executives appear to have helped put a face on the economic struggles the country faces, and the anger targeting AIG is palpable.  Death threats have been pouring in since the brouhaha broke, the company said, and its workers are taking no chances.

“It’s scary,” one executive said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he feared retribution. “People are very, very nervous for their security.”

Corporate officials advised employees in a memo posted on Gawker.com to avoid wearing the company logo, in an effort to keep from drawing attention. Workers were also urged to travel in pairs at night and park in well-lit areas.

And typifying the preoccupation with the AIG payouts, a busload of activists plans to drive by executives’ houses Saturday in an attempt to deliver letters highlighting the strife of ordinary families in the recession and seeking solutions for economic recovery.

Reid, Pelosi, Obama, Frank, Dodd, Schumar, Ackerman and a host of other “leaders” saw the smoke and decided the most appropriate response was to strike a match and  toss on some gasoline.  All of this righteous indignation and disgust may serve as a smokescreen to hide the failings of our “leaders”, but at what cost?

Igniting a class war, whether to cover up for their own failure to regulate and provide oversight or to help push an agenda that requires a common foe for the rest of us to hate…  you know, the “greedy, rich bastards who are stealing our money”… is not only unconscionable, it is very, very dangerous.

If any of these people are hurt on either side, the blood is on their hands.

Quick Thoughts: More on Obama on Leno

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Can you imagine,  just for a moment, the screams from the left if George Bush were to have spent an hour on Leno’s couch during the economic crises at the end of his term, yucking it up and making jokes about the Secret Service and the Special Olympics.

Pelosi would be screaming for impeachment hearings to start immediately, an apology would fall far short and nothing less than a public flogging would suffice.

Certainly KP Obama is getting some grief from the right, but nothing close to what we would be hearing from the MSM, Hollywood, Congress, the ACLU, and just about every other tool of the radical left.

You know I’m right….

Quick Thoughts: Try to remember what it means to be president

Friday, March 20th, 2009

KP Obama, the Karaoke President, unfortunately appears to not have fully grasped all of  the responsibility that comes with being the President of the United States of America.

Think about that phrase: The President of the United States of America.

Greatest country in the world.  Arguably the greatest country in known history.  Beacon of freedom and hope.  Defender of the defenseless.

With that title comes many serious responsibilities to go along with the little perks like weekly cocktail parties and living rent free in the White House.

So, when the President of the United States of America opens his mouth and says ANYTHING, it means something.  It is important.  No matter what he says, it will either be helpful or hurtful, but it will never be meaningless.  Not because of the man; because this is The President of the United States of America speaking.

I know KP has only been in office for 59 days and the adjustment has got to be incredible, going from having no leadership experience to being THE leader is quite a leap, but there is no time for on the job training.

It is great that KP Obama can read from a teleprompter and, when away from the teleprompter, can fall back on cliche’s like “the buck stops here”, but when he strays from the script to sound clever or funny, he tends to get himself into trouble.

Case in point, joking around on Leno last night about the “bubble” he is in was funny, but the men and women protecting his life, willing to lay down their own life to protect him… that’s really not a joke Mr. President.  Likely these brave men and women enjoyed the joke too, perhaps it’s not a big deal.  Then again, we are not paying KP Obama to be a comedian and this is not supposed to be a popularity contest.  Sad thing is, too many of us base the performance of our “leaders” on how much we like them, not whether they are doing the job we pay them to do.

But the real example of how KP Obama can get himself into trouble, and hurt many Americans in the process, came when he was trying to be funny by making a joke about his bowling skills.  Trouble is, he got a laugh at the expense of others when he compared his poor skills as a bowler to the performance of the courageous athletes of the Special Olympics.

I commend him for immediately apologize via phone after the show; he should thank the staffer who pointed out to him what an idiotic move this was so that he could try to correct the mistake.  But apologies only help to a point, the pain that may have been caused does not vanish because KP Obama apologized, and the promise to invite Special Olympians to the White House is such a transparent guilt-driven move that it appears patronizing.

I am certain the president did not intend to hurt anyone, and he likely feels bad that he may have hurt someone, but that’s the risk he runs by not considering that EVERYTHING he says matters.  As he said during the campaign, “don’t tell me that words don’t matter”.

Mr. President, it is time for you to leave your school yard punk attitude, smirks and cutting remarks behind and start acting like the President of the United States of America.

When you admitted, on the campaign trail, that you inhaled because “that was the point”, it drew a laugh, but it was obvious at that moment that you did not understand the influence your words carried even as a candidate.

When someone recently questioned why the “stimulus” included spending in areas that were clearly not aimed at stimulating the economy, you chose to respond with essentially the same words, indicating that – of course there will be spending in a stimulus package “that’s the point”.  Again, laugh laugh laugh… but you blew off a legitimate question with a flip, school-yard response.

You may well get away with behaving as if being the President of the United States of America is somewhat akin to leading a basketball team for the next for years, but you will hurt many along the way, you will diminish the office in the eyes of those who look to the USA to lead, and you will be remembered as someone who happened to be at the right place at the right time and did not make the best of this amazing opportunity.

Please don’t get me wrong, I actually enjoyed the appearance on Leno.  President Obama came across as a likable guy, said some things that were good to hear,  but he really needs to remember that he is the president 24×7, even while yucking it up with Leno.

What law has been broken?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

What gives Barney Frank, Andrew Cuomo and all of these other windbags the right to demand the names of the AIG execs who received bonuses.  Who cares if we don’t like the fact that they got these bonuses, what law did they break?  Did they have a contract that promised them a bonus?  Did they fulfill their end of the bargain? Yes and yes.  So what gives any of us the right to interfere with that?

It’s frankly none of our business who got these bonuses.  If you want to go after the company for the money, fine, but even that is not very logical since money is fungible.  How do we even know which money is going where?  Take back the $165m and do what, spend it on research into the mating ritual of the jackass.

Want to subpoena someone.. how about Dodd?  How about Frank?  How about Geithner?

The Democrats, and some Republicans, are turning this whole thing into a class war.  Make too much money, we will confiscate it.  Even heard one Democrat, not sure if she is a senator or representative, say she wishes she could tax them 1,000 percent.  What the hell is that?

How dare they knowingly disregard the US Constitution to attempt to pass a law to retroactively take back the bonuses.

How dare they, with Barney Frank and Gary Ackerman leading the way, dismiss concerns for the safety of these American citizens and demand that their names be released to the public.

How dare they stand before congress, one after the other, and call these AIG execs despicable, scum, disgraceful simply because they accepted money they were entitled to under the contract they signed.

How dare all of these hypocrites complain when not one of them is turning back their salary, not one of them is declining the pay raise they just received, the vast majority of them are accepting taxpayer money for wasteful pet projects, and some of them even accepted money directly from AIG.  Have they done anything to earn a raise?

You know what I find disgusting?  Our “leaders” in congress, our president and politicians like Cuomo who are purposefully trying to divide this country to further their own agenda.

Quick Link: How to destroy the economy in a few easy steps

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Excellent summary from Gina Cobb here.

Excerpt:

Step 1: Notice that banks don’t make as many loans to some groups of people as they do to others.

Step 2: Stir up envy. This has the benefit of helping to ensure one’s own re-election.

Step 3: Impugn the motives of profit-making financial institutions. Decide that the bankers’ loan decisions must be based on discrimination rather than based on legitimate lending criteria.

Step 4: Require by law that banks make loans to weak borrowers who may not be able to repay the loans. When warned that the government program backing these loans is financially unsound, dismiss such warnings.

Step 5: When banks begin to fail, keep the same regulations in effect and blame the banks.

Visit the Gina Cobb’s site to see the rest of the steps.
