Quick Thought: Iran vs Honduras

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

President Obama and most nations have called for the reinstatement of the President of Honduras who was removed via a military coup…  apparently, when President Manuel Zelaya tried to force through a referendum allowing him to be president for life, the military stepped in (I know this is probably an oversimplification).

On the other hand, in Iran the military acted against the people to keep Ahmadinejad in power after he clearly retained his office via a fixed election.

So… when a “president” tries to become a dictator and is thrown own by the military, Obama wants him returned to power…

And when a “president” remains in power via a fixed election, essentially acting as either a dictator or,  it could be argued, the front man for a dictatorship by committee, Obama doesn’t believe it is appropriate to interfere…

A hint at things to come?  This president for life thing has a nice ring to it…

Democratic sense of entitlement?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Saw this over at Bottom Line Up Front:

YouTube Preview Image

Is anyone else starting to sense that the Democratic Party is somewhat out of control, drunk on power, or just allowing their sense of entitlement to be on display for all to see?

The bend rules to squelch any input from Republicans in the US House and Senate, in Texas they actually left the state to avoid a quorum so that the Texas legislature could not have a session… don’t remember that one?

From CNN: With action in the Texas House brought to a standstill, roughly 50 state Democratic representatives said they would remain in neighboring Oklahoma “as long as it takes” to block a Republican-drawn redistricting plan that could cost them five seats in Congress.

And now in NY they stage a sit-in, refuse to accept that a Republican had been elected as the senate president, and carried the protest to the point where these elected officials disrespected our country by refusing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance.

Why… because it is their right to be in control in this brave new world of ours…

Senator Al Franken… seriously?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Three cheers for our newest senator,  Al Franken:

YouTube Preview Image

This is great!  No really…  one party government is the way to go.  President, House and Senate were already Democrat of course … (you knew that, right?  Just checking because a lot of folks thought the Republicans were in charge during the last election),  but now the Dems have 60, count em, 60 votes in the Senate!

No more faux filibusters (you know, the kind where no one actually filibusters like in the old days, reading from the phone book for hours.. they just announce “hey, I’m filibustering” and then go out for martinis).

So, this is either the second sign of the apocalypse, the final climb of the pendulum to the far left before a rapid swing back to the right, what this country needs, what this country deserves, or totally irrelevant because we’ve already screwed things up so bad there’s no real hope of recovery…  I’m sure with time we can come up with something positive out of this…

Six months from now, for folks who voted for Obama and who helped secure huge majorities in the House and Senate for the Dems, I’ll be asking one question: “How’s that workin’ for ya”.

Way back in Feb 2007, Thinkin’Bout Stuff presented a case for the strong possibility Obama would be elected president.  Based upon his current course and trajectory, would have to say, more than three years out, he’s looking like a likely one-term president.   Frankly, I think that would be OK with him because he is looking to reshape America in his image of “fairness” without regard to his future political fortunes, fully aware that it will be virtually impossible to unravel in his lifetime.

Time to usher in a new era of equitable justice in the United States

Friday, June 26th, 2009

As we look to shut down Guantanamo and move our country towards a more equitable and fair approach to ensuring swift justice for terrorists or criminals who are more comfortable with Islamic law, we need to look to those who have centuries of experience at providing justice that will hold up under the scrutiny of those in this world who expect better of the United States in the future.  From FoxNews:

“An Islamic court in Somalia on Thursday cut off a hand and foot from each of four men convicted of stealing phones and guns, drawing hundreds of onlookers as the weeping men were punished at a military camp.”

Although they had body parts cut off with a long knife and no anesthesia, the men were reportedly thankful that they were not forced to listen to loud music,  stay awake for hours at a time, deal with the absolute terror of having a caterpillar placed in their cell, or dunked repeatedly in water.

Why was this man not arrested?

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

You are likely familiar with the situation where 9-year-old Sean Goldman, a US citizen, was taken to Brazil by his mother, five years ago, for a “vacation” from which they never returned… yes?

She stayed in Brazil with Sean, remarried, then died in childbirth.

So… Sean gets to go home to live in the US with his father who never lost custody and clearly should have custody as Sean’s real father, right?  Well… apparently it’s not that simple.

Sean’s stepfather wants Sean to stay in Brazil and says Sean wants to stay in Brazil… even if Sean wants to stay in Brazil, neither of these “wants” should be relevant since the stepfather is not the father and the boy is 9 years old.

So, the battle continues in the Brazilian courts while Sean remains, from the US perspective and based upon international law, illegally in the custody of the step-father, Joao Paulo Lins e Silva.

So here’s my question: Joao Paulo Lins e Silva was (or is) in NY to appear on CBS to plead his case directly to the American people that Sean should stay in Brazil with him.

Since Joao Paulo Lins e Silva has essentially kidnapped another man’s son, why not arrest him?  Then perhaps we can work out some sort of exchange.

Sorry the video doesn’t fit on the page… can’t find a way to make it smaller. Also, for some reason, this will continue playing older FoxNews videos on this topic… clearly I’m no HTML expert.

War deaths? No biggie…

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Seems that way now that Obama is president.

How many of us even know that US deaths in Afghanistan are at a record pace in 2009?  Think that wouldn’t be major headlines in every paper and every MSM news report if Bush or McCain were president?

How do I even know this?  Because it was mentioned in the second to last paragraph in an AP article that leads off with the following:

“A rare rocket attack on the main U.S. base in Afghanistan early Sunday killed two U.S. troops and wounded six other Americans, including two civilians, officials said.”

A RARE rocket attack.  Just an isolated incident.  Nothing to be overly concerned about.  These things happen.  Hey, wonder how Barack is spending Father’s Day.  He’s such an inspiration.  Don’t you just hate Bush even more now that you know how wonderful things are with Barack Obama leading us as the father of our country?  Jennifer Weiss, writing for the SF Chronicle, actually said this:

“On this Father’s Day, the American public should proudly note that our president takes his personal role as father (and spouse) as seriously as he does his job as father of the country.”

Excuse me?  Father of our country?  Excuse me while I wretch.

But I digress…

Bottom line:  the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, the war on terror in general… no longer really news worthy now that we can all rest easy in the knowledge that any deaths now are for a good cause and therefor hardly worth getting upset over.

One other thought along a similar line:  after months of being told that the health care system is broken and we will all be losing our health care, polls are showing that Americans consider health care a major issue that needs to be addressed… shocking.

After months of being told that Israel needs to be more flexible and the Arab states have gotten a raw deal, polls are showing support from Americans dropping dramatically.

So… when we are told something is true over and over, is it any surprise that polls show we actually start believing in this new version reality?

Nor should we be surprised that these polls, influenced by our president, are then used to justify his positions… shocking.
