Quick Thought: Health Care

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

I have an idea,  let’s all write to our Representatives and Senators and insist that whatever they write into health care legislation they have to accept for themselves and their families and give up the sweet deal they have right now….

I have an idea… how about writing to congress insisting that whatever they write into health care legislation, they have to accept for themselves and their families and give up the sweet deal they have right now….

Approval/Disapproval: Obama v. Bush

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Checking out RealClearPolitics today and saw the following…  President Obama’s approval/disapproval, after his “sweeping mandate” last November, is not as high as President Bush’s approval/disapproval on the same day of his first term after a controversial victory in 2000.

Obama as of 7/22/09:

  • Approve       54.8%
  • Disapprove  40.8%
  • Spread           14.0%

Bush as of  7/22/2001:

  • Approve        54.7%
  • Disapprove  32.5%
  • Spread           22.2%

Maybe it’s time we stop hearing how Obama has all this political juice to drive his socialist agenda…

Boxer’s in A Bunch Again?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Barbara Boxer… excuse me… SENATOR Boxer has been really showing her true self recently, hasn’t she… err.. . hasn’t the senator.

First she dresses down a US General for referring her to the rather disrespectful title of “ma’am”… how rude.

YouTube Preview Image

And now the latest, she is called out by President and CEO Harry Alford of the Black Chamber of Commerce for  condescending and, in his view, racial treatment at a Senate hearing.  After she is called on it by Mr. Alford, she really shows her true colors by speaking down to him and telling him that he should know that other black leaders would be very proud of him testifying before SENATOR Boxer…  what a true honor.  Here’s a cookie and some milk… now run along and just be happy you had this opportunity afforded so few of your kind.

I have real issues with condescension, whether directed towards me or anyone else. Setting aside the racial aspect of this exchange…  who the hell does she think she is?  She is no better than General Walsh, who clearly meant no disrespect; she is no better than Mr. Alford who did not deserve being treated like some child who should be grateful for having been granted an audience with the head master, and she sure as hell is no better than any one of her constituents who she owes her job to in the first place.

As far as the racial aspect goes, judge for yourself, but she sure as heck sounded like she was talking down to Mr. Alford and treating him as if he should get in line with all them other blacks who she had letters from… and be glad of it.

At least she didn’t get all over Alford for calling her ma’am…

Yahoo!Buzz: “Bono Dissed Bush, Apologizes”

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Saw that headline and thought “classy move”.

Unfortunately the headline is somewhere between spin and an outright lie.  Reading the article, the closest thing we find to an apology is:

During the interview with the BBC, Bono admitted to feeling bad about dissing the leader of the free world. President Bush, Bono argues, did a lot for the people of Africa. Perhaps Bono’s admission is his way of publicly making amends for the snub (despite the fact that nobody except Obama even knew about it).

How is that an apology?  From what I saw, he told the story to brag about an encounter with Obama, not to apologize to Bush.  He got a good laugh from the audience, did mention Bush was great to the folks of Africa, but the words “I’m sorry for my behavior” or “I apologize” never crossed his lips.

Sorry… but Yahoo!Buzz has only highlighted the fact that Bono behaved poorly.

“So it is written, so it shall be done!” .. or not

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Six months ago, newly minted President Barack Obama proclaimed Guantanamo “will be closed no later than one year from now.”

So it is written, so it shall be done.

Not looking so certain these days.

To be fair, he still has six months to go, but already he has had to back track on campaign declarations about the indefinite detention of some prisoners and has struggled to figure out what to do with the terrorists  after Guantanamo closes… although he did find a nice resort to house some of them.  On the plus side, not likely they will go back to their former lives… who would…

On April 20th, the president challenged his cabinet to cut $100 million, just $100 million, from their collective budget within 90 days.

So it is written, so it shall be done.

$100 million is a lot to you and me, but it should be incredibly easy to find $100 million in savings at that level.  Could probably save that much by cutting down on flights passed the Status of Liberty and weekly parties at the White House.

Seemed to me, at the time he was making these pronouncements, that he appeared quite naive and seemed to think presidents just have to say things and then magic happens…

So it is written, so it shall be done…

Now reality is setting in… it actually takes planning and hard work to accomplish things.  And not everything that made sense on the campaign trail makes sense in the real world.

So, it is written… so?

The Obama Popularity Myth

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Everyone is supposed to get behind President Obama’s drive to change our country because he is so very popular and has the support of the American people…  uh huh.

Checking the RCP average of job approval polls for President Obama today, we find the following:

  • Approve   56.1%  (down from a high of over 65% earlier this year)
  • Disapprove  38.6%
  • Spread           17.5%

Pretty good you say?

How about that rascal George W. Bush, who everyone hated after he took office for his first term because he stole the election from Al Gore?  Surely he was very unpopular after the election…

As of 7/22/2001:

  • Approve        54.7%
  • Disapprove  32.5%
  • Spread           22.2%

Similar approval number, but the disapproval and spread are significant.  Barack Obama, at the  same point in his presidency, is 5 points behind George W. Bush!

Whoa!

Guess he’s not as popular as he thinks…

Has it come down to this? Tax all you want as long as you don’t tax me?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

A quote I just read from Nancy Pelosi, the ultra-far-left liberal Democrat Speaker of the House, is stunning in its unabashedly blatant admission that it’s all about taxing just enough people to avoid losing elections and public support.

Speaking on the current proposal to pay for “universal” health care by taxing individuals who earn $280,000/year ($350,000 for families), Pelosi said:

From Politico:  “I’d like it to go higher than it is,” Pelosi said Friday.

The speaker would like the trigger raised to $500,000 for individuals and $1 million for families, “so it’s a millionaire’s tax,” she said. “When someone hears, ‘2,’ they think, ‘Oh, I could be there,’ because they don’t know the $280,000 is for one person.

“It sounds like you’re in the neighborhood. So I just want to remove all doubt. You hear ‘$500,000 a year,’ you think, ‘My God, that’s not me.’”

That’s what this is all about, isn’t it…  as long as we can keep the threshold high enough to eliminate enough voters from the pool of people that will be milked and bilked to fund this government takeover of a major segment of our economy, all will be well… because in the cynical minds of liberals like Pelosi, it’s all about “me”.

As long as “I” am not footing the bill, tax all you want, right?

If she is right, how sad for us….
