640,329 jobs create or saved? Really?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Just love it when folks try to make a number seem precise … 640,329 jobs.  Should have said 640, 329.186 jobs, now that would be precise!

Back to reality.

From February 2009 through September 2009 the United States lost 3,386,000 jobs.

This is a fact that is easily confirmed at the US  Bureau of Labor Statistics website.

Nearly 3.4 million jobs lost, Feb-Sep 2009.  Net jobs lost.  Not gained, not saved, not imagined.

Presumably any “created or saved” jobs are already factored into this bottom line number.

Assuming the administration is not lying.. err.. mistaken about their numbers, all the latest report means is we theoretically would have lost 4.4 million jobs if not for the stimulus.

Instead of lying… sorry again… reporting that jobs have been “created or saved”, why not tell the truth.  Assuming the assessment is correct, the stimulus has slowed the acceleration of job losses.

Is that good enough?  Cause for celebration?  And how does that translate to the assertion that we are on track to “create or save” 3.5 million jobs by the end of 2010?

If we have a net loss by the end of 2010 of 5 million jobs will we be told it would have been 8.5 million if not for the stimulus?

And what of this promised 3.5 million jobs.  Should that figure not be 3.5 million more jobs than existed when the promise was made? Is the target not a net gain of jobs instead of some imaginary reduction in the loss of jobs?

So we should really expect to see 6.9 million jobs created between Oct 2009 and Dec 2010 so that the net gain will be 3.5 million jobs.

Here again is the chart showing the promise vs the reality:

Long way to go folks… what piece of the stimulus can we expect to move that line up?

Europe falling out of love with Obama?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

We all know the story line… Europe hated Bush, they fell in love with Obama and we all lived happily ever after.

Problem with love affairs…  often they are based upon superficial infatuations and whirlwind courtships that lead to major disappointments when reality sets in.

Looks like the honeymoon may be ending for President Obama:

Der Spiegel on Afghanistan – The world has been waiting for clear words from the White House for months. Obama has had government and military analysts studying the military and political situation in the embattled Hindu Kush region since early January.

<snip>

Whether it means withdrawal or a troop buildup, NATO expects Obama to make a decision. So far, no one knows which direction he favors. Even experienced Washington insiders have encountered a wall of silence at the White House, leading Europeans to question whether Washington even believes in its war anymore.

<snip>

…  Europeans are still looking for one thing from the White House: leadership.

The cost of war, the cost of freedom, is sadly the loss of every country’s greatest treasure… the finest young men and women of a generation.

President Obama honored 18 of our fallen heroes Wednesday and I will not dishonor their memory by debating whether this would have had more meaning without the photo op.

But President Obama said something Thursday that, while understandable following such a sobering experience, at the same time may hint at a weakness that a Commander in Chief can not afford.

From AP - Hours after a personal encounter with the grim cost of war, President Barack Obama said Thursday the sight of 18 flag-covered cases holding the remains of Americans killed this week in Afghanistan can’t help but influence his thinking about sending more troops overseas.

<snip>

Speaking softly and somewhat haltingly, Obama said losses such as these are “something that I think about each and every day.”

Asked whether the somber experience — watching cases carrying the remains come off a giant C-17 cargo plane one by one in the darkness and meeting privately with families so fresh in their grief — will affect his overhaul of the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, the president didn’t hesitate to say that it would.

“The burden that both our troops and their families bear in any wartime situation is going to bear on how I see these conflicts,” he said, adding nothing more.

How could anyone not be affected witnessing the return of these Americans, lives cut short, and the grieving of family and friends.

But the question before President Obama requires a decision to be made in the best interest of our country.  If the President does not believe that this war is worth the loss of any lives, then he needs to pull out all of the troops now.

Because if we do not plan to fight to win, if we do not plan to provide enough resources and support for the troops who are already engaged, if the President is hesitating to send more troops because of experiences such as this, he will need to explain to the folks who lose a loved one tomorrow, next week, next month, why their son or daughter died waiting for him to make a decision.

Is pulling out the right decision?  Should he send more troops into harms way?  Ignore the advice of generals and just stay the course?  Frankly I don’t know… that’s above my pay grade, but not above President Obama’s.

Time to stop deliberating like a senator, campaigning like a candidate and reading press clippings… time to start leading like a president.

… and again.

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Data keeps coming in about how the “stimulus”, touted by team Obama as a huge success beyond Biden’s wildest dreams, has predictably failed to stimulate anything except liberal appetites for wealth redistribution.

Yet another example from the latest enemy of the administration, the Associated Press:

From Fox News – The Obama administration on Thursday slammed a report from The Associated Press alleging the government had overstated by thousands the number of jobs it has created or saved with federal contracts under President Obama’s $787 billion recovery program.

The White House seized on an initial report from a government oversight board weeks ago that claimed federal contracts awarded to businesses under the recovery plan already had helped pay for more than 30,000 jobs. The administration said the number was evidence that the stimulus program had exceeded early expectations toward reaching the president’s promise of creating or saving 3.5 million jobs by the end of next year.

30,000 is a great start on reaching 3.5 million?  They must be expecting some pretty major acceleration in job growth.  As we demonstrated in earlier posts, even if the 30,000 number was true, the number of jobs is dropping fast:

So how is gaining 30,000 jobs while losing over 3 million jobs exceeding expectations?  Must be some pretty damn low expectations.

Unfortunately the 30,000 figure is a lie.  I would have said the administration was mistaken, but I noticed that the politically correct thing to say these days is “lie”.  For example, saw this on the DNC website today:

After fighting health reform with lies, deceit, and multi-million dollar ad campaigns, the health insurance lobby — America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) — recently released a report on the “effects of health reform.”

Just going with the flow here….

As I was saying, the Democrats have been lying about the jobs numbers, which were already weak, and their latest “Mission Accomplished” moment is sadly nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

Maybe this was just another in a long line of honest mistakes… or maybe not so much:

  • A Colorado company said it created 4,231 jobs with the help of Obama’s economic recovery plan. The real number: fewer than 1,000.
  • A child care center in Florida said it saved 129 jobs with the help of stimulus money. Instead, it gave pay raises to its existing employees.
  • Officials at East Central Technical College in Douglas, Ga., said they now know they shouldn’t have claimed 280 stimulus jobs linked to more than $200,000 to buy three semi-trucks and trailers for commercial driving instruction, and a modular classroom and bathroom for a health education program.
  • Elsewhere in the U.S., some jobs credited to the stimulus program were counted two, three, four or even more times.
  • The San Joaquin, Calif., Regional Rail Commission reported creating or saving 125 jobs as part of a stimulus project to lay railroad track. Because the project drew from two pools of money, the commission reported that figure twice, bringing the total to 250.
  • Barbara Moore, executive director of the Child Care Association of Brevard County in Cocoa, Fla., reported that the $98,669 she received in stimulus money saved 129 jobs at her center, though the cash was used to give her 129 employees a 3.9 percent cost-of-living raise. She said she needed to boost their salaries because some workers had left for better paying jobs.
  • Colorado-based Teletech Government Solutions had worked with the Federal Communications Commission to come up with a job count for its $28.3 million contract for call centers fielding consumer questions about conversion of televisions to receive digital signals. The company reported creating 4,231 jobs — the highest number listed in the first stimulus accounting — even though 3,000 of those workers received a paycheck for five weeks or less.

OK.. perhaps “lies” is too strong a word… let’s go with “incompetence”

Quick Thought: “Mission Accomplished” … again

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Last week we learned that:

A top White House economist says spending from the $787 billion economic stimulus has already had its biggest impact on US economic growth and will likely not contribute to significant expansion next year.

Christina Romer, the head of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, said Thursday that the $194 billion already spent gave a jolt to the economy that contributed to growth in the second and third quarters of the year.

And now, remember that shining example of why the stimulus was so successful… the Cash for Clunkers program?  I was one of those who felt this was not going to do anything more than get folks who were planning to buy a car in the next few months to act quicker.  Seemed like others would not likely in a position to act even with the incentive.  In my view the result would not be more sales, it would mean about the same number of sales a bit sooner and then a drop off of sales, at the same time pulling used cars off the market which would hurt those of us who can not afford new cars.

Well… it’s worse than I thought.  Not only did this not really increase overall sales and pull affordable used cars off the market (driving up used car prices), it cost a bundle of tax cash for no real benefit:

Edmunds - Edmunds.com, the premier resource for online automotive information, has determined that Cash for Clunkers cost taxpayers $24,000 per vehicle sold.

That’s right folks… that’s not a typo…  $24,000 per car for a program that provided buyers an average rebate of $1,667.

Ah yes, government efficiency on display.

Mission accomplished!

Who ISN’T the enemy?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Who are his constituents?

Who does he believe he represents?

President Obama is on record that he views Wall Street as the enemy… as well as insurance companies, the US Chamber of Commerce, any organization represented in Washington by a lobbyist (unless the lobbyist supports Obama’s positions), the entire Fox News network and the Fox network in general, “tea baggers”, those who write blogs that criticize his administration, Republicans, executives who make more then he does, former members of the Bush administration (unless they are currently in the Obama administration), and anyone who asks a question that scratches deeper than “How are you adjusting to life as president? Finding enough time for golf, basketball, entertaining guests and dates with the Mrs.?”.

All of these individuals and groups are purveyors of lies, clutching to the status quo of wealth via oppression, resistant to change that will advance this country forward, naysayers who do nothing but criticize while Obama mops up after the mess of previous administrations, devoid of ideas and just flat out wrong!

That covers quite a large slice of those of us who thought we elected a president who represents ALL OF THE PEOPLE, ALL OF THE TIME.

We may disagree strongly with the direction he is taking this country, we may not even like one single thing he is trying to do…  and this may be extremely annoying, depressing, aggravating, disconcerting, disappointing, irritating, frustrating and perplexing to a man who truly believes what he is doing is the right thing for this country, but his disdainfully dismissive approach to those who openly oppose him, and by extension to those of us they represent, is not just disappointing… it is unacceptable.

This man needs to learn that leadership is not about repeating the same line over and over and over again with the expectation that repeating the line just one more time will help the most simple-minded among us understand the wisdom of his ways.

Leadership is not about pointing a finger backward to justify the lack of progress forward.

Leadership is not demanding that everyone fall in line or shut up.

Leadership is not about squelching debate.

Leadership is not about taking sides and leading the attack on the “enemy”.

Leadership is not about threatening Americans and those we elect or select to represent us.

Leadership is about establishing a clear vision that inspires the nation, mapping the path we must follow to realize that vision, then leading us down that path.  Will everyone follow?  Not likely.  But if the vision is good,  most will.  And if enough of us don’t follow, perhaps the leader is on the wrong path.

Under this administration, under this president, under this “leadership” in the House and Senate, instead of journeying forward together with common purpose many of us are purposefully tossed to the side of the road or dragged along behind as a ready source of revenue to fund this trip to the new world.

Sadly, it is becoming “crystal clear” that this president sees the ends as justifying the means and he has shown that he is willing to exploit and expand divisions within this country to reach his goal.

Since I am no longer welcome on the journey, I look forward to 2010 when we will again have the opportunity to elect a new group of pathfinders and 2012 when we will once again elect a leader.

Hopefully this time we will eschew the temptation to elect a rock star and settle for someone who actually knows how to lead more than an an adoring crowd.

Most blatant Obama attack on First Amendment to Date

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Heard on Fox News tonight:

The administration contacted the White House pool of five network rotation that has for decades shared the cost in duties of daily coverage of the presidency. And to which Fox News has been long since 1997. And made available for round Robin interviews the executive pay — Ken Feinberg. But the administration specified that all members of the — were welcome except Fox News. The Washington bureau chiefs of the five TV news networks consulted and decided that none of them would interview — unless fox was included.

First, kudos to the other members of the TV pool.

Second, that must be embarrassing to the other news networks that team Obama is confident they will get a “fair” shake from these outlets.

Third… what has this country come to that the President of the United States believes he is above the US Constitution.

This behavior is unacceptable and should be denounced by ALL Americans outside of Chicago.

Quick Thought: “Mission Accomplished”

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Wish I could draw political cartoons… I have this picture in my head of President Obama standing in front of a chart showing the growth of unemployment since January with a huge banner saying “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED”:

From Fox News -

A top White House economist says spending from the $787 billion economic stimulus has already had its biggest impact on US economic growth and will likely not contribute to significant expansion next year.

Christina Romer, the head of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, said Thursday that the $194 billion already spent gave a jolt to the economy that contributed to growth in the second and third quarters of the year.
