Was HS Principal Wrong to Schedule Blacks-Only Class Trip?

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

News item:

From FoxNews: Michigan Elementary School Principal Investigated for Blacks-Only Class Trip

An elementary school principal in Michigan is under investigation for authorizing a field trip last week for 30 black students to meet with an African-American rocket scientist. Students who are not black were excluded from the outing — a possible violation of a state law that bans racial favoritism in public schools.

The principal, Mike Madison, who is black, said the trip was part of an effort to close the achievement gap between black and white students.

I think the principal had good intentions.

If we lived in a country, and a time, where race was not used as a means to gain power and race baiting was not just another career path… perhaps this would not be such a big deal.

But we live in a time and place where race is used to demonize political opponents; where many believe equality is an end state instead of a starting point; where political correctness is so out of control that a law to help catch people in this country illegally is immediately twisted by the press, pundits and our president into a oppressive, racist attack based upon skin color.

As a result, even the best intentions can run afoul of the race police… the rub here is that folks are learning that this particular blade cuts both ways.

This would be a completely different news story if a white principal had schedule a whites only trip to meet with Larry Bird as a means to encourage them to aspire to play in the NBA…  President Obama would have already made three off the cuff snide remarks and invited Al Sharpton and Bird to the White House for a beer with that principal.

But this story, which might not even have been news a few years ago, is news today, not because what this principal did was necessarily wrong, but precisely because what he did would not be acceptable if this were an all white trip and folks are plain tired of the double standard.

If what he did is, in my view, not wrong… it was not as right as it could be.

What if the same exact trip were scheduled but half the students were white?  Aside from avoiding the potential for dividing his student body along racial lines, there would be the added benefit of exposing the white students to this successful rocket scientist who happens to be black.

Was the trip to meet and learn from a rocket scientist or a black rocket scientist?  Either way, wouldn’t the white students benefit?   If there was a belief that the black students would benefit from meeting a successful black scientist, why wouldn’t the white students also benefit.. in fact, would that not benefit everyone in the end if one of the goals was to drop the race barrier?

The principal believes he has learned a lesson from this trip and would have done more to educate the parents prior to the trip…  but I don’t believe that is the lesson to be learned here.

The lesson is that we do more to advance towards a color blind society when adults, even if they themselves are not color blind, behave as if they are for the benefit of the children.

That means not selecting students for trips, clubs, proms, sports, or anything based upon their race… class dismissed.

Liberal Vision: A Nation of Vampires

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

As the Reid/Pelosi/Obama vision of America continues to materialize before our eyes, one thing is already very clear… an America dependent on government is a sustaining source of power for those who feed that dependency.

In a warped perversion of the old “trickle down” economics, far-left liberals are accelerating the flow of wealth with high powered siphons and are doing so without even trying to hide their disdain of those who supply the life-blood of our economy.

Impatient with voluntary trips to the economic blood bank by those who live and thrive in our economy, they have turned to vampirism and will greedily feed off the hosts until they are bled dry.

When 40% of the country not only pays zero income tax but actually receives a check from the government at tax time (that’s right, 40% of the country actually makes a profit on April 15), when 10% of the country pays 73% of all income taxes collected by the federal government, what we have is a major redistribution of wealth.

But even that is not enough for the far left, they want to expand the number of available hosts (declaring more of us to be rich in the process) and ramp up the flow from all available hosts to feed more of the vampire class and expand their base so that, in their minds, perpetual power will be within their reach.

Vlad would be proud.

The problem is that this is not sustainable.  When all hosts are bled dry, the economy will collapse and all will suffer, the vampires, the hosts… and those of us caught in the middle.

What works best for our country?

The same thing that has worked, albeit cyclically, for decades.

  • Those of us with lots of money who invest in our nation and fuel the engines that creates jobs
  • Those of us doing fairly well, buying lots of stuff and keep the economy afloat
  • Those of us getting by and working hard for a better life for our families
  • Those of us struggling that need our help
  • And.. a government that protects those of us who struggle while staying out of the way of the rest of us

When the government becomes the economy, the economy will collapse from the top down as the rich stop creating jobs, the well off and those getting by have no money to feed the economy, and finally those who are struggling no longer have the rest of us to help them out because we are standing beside them instead of reaching out with a helping hand.

A nation of vampires is doomed to a life in the shadows…

Quick Thought: Az defense budget should include bus fare to SF

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

So San Francisco feels so strongly that Arizona is being unfair to illegal immigrants that they are ready to boycott:

NBC - San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera on Monday called for a sweeping boycott of the state of Arizona and Arizona-based businesses.

“Just as it did two decades ago when it refused to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Arizona has again chosen to isolate itself from the rest of the nation. Our most appropriate response is to assure that their isolation is tangible rather than merely symbolic. San Francisco should lead the way in adopting and aggressively pursuing a sweeping boycott of Arizona and Arizona-based businesses until this unjust law is repealed or invalidated. My office is fully committed to work with San Francisco city departments and commissions to identify all applicable contracts, and to pursue termination wherever possible. And my office stands ready to assist in any legal challenges in whatever way it can.”

Interesting how the controversy over MLK Day slipped in here.  Don’t want to go off on a tangent here, but there have been many great men in our history, Dr. King was one of them, should we have a day for each one?  Forget the cost to taxpayers, right?  Let’s just stick with the liberal side of the aisle.. where’s JFK Day, RFK Day? FDR Day?

But I digress…

If San Francisco is ready, willing and able to embrace this influx of immigrants, Arizona should set aside money to buy them bus tickets and send any arrested for non-violent crimes to SF where the will be welcomed with open arms.

Another problem solved…

By the way, what would hurt more…  SF boycotting Arizona, or the entire state of Arizona boycotting SF?

Just thinkin’…

Oh.. and funny how San Fran folks think Arizona folks are the ones who are isolated from the rest of the nation :-)

Franken or Pelosi… who has more class?

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Was about to write about Nancy Pelosi, then saw this clip of Al Franken acting like the mean-spirited, condescending, asshole that he is and couldn’t decide which to write about, so decided to not decide and write about both:

First … this guy is the most junior senator in the Senate.  Why on Earth is he chairing ANYTHING?

Second…  it has been many years since I served as the parliamentarian for an organization or brushed up on Robert’s Rules of Order, but I believe Franken was out of order; before he can speak or object as a member he must first step down from the chair

Third… what a disrespectful, mean-spirited, condescending, self-absorbed, egotistical, self-important little twit!  Senator Lieberman requested a couple of minutes to finish his statement, a request that is always agreed to without objection out of respect and courtesy among senators, and this low-life injects his brand of sarcastic disdain for anyone to the right of Fidel Castro into one of the most respected and formal institutions in our government.

As predicted, Al Franken is an embarrassment to our country and to the people of Minnesota who elected him.

Speaking of left-wing partisans… Nancy Pelosi.

In October of 2008 Nancy Pelosi said:

“Elect us, hold us accountable, and make a judgment and then go from there. But I do tell you that if the Democrats win, and have substantial majorities, Congress of the United States will be more bipartisan,” said Pelosi.

Seem more bipartisan to you?  Maybe she meant twice-as-partisan.

The latest example of her bipartisanship is with the congressional delegation in Copenhagen.  Apparently there was a press conference held today and someone forgot to invite the Republicans.  In fact, the Republicans were denied access to the press conference.

When asked about this obvious partisan play, in a foreign country where we expect our “leaders” to leave domestic politics behind, Pelosi said the Republicans were welcome to hold their own press conference.

Way to show a united front, one America, indivisible, under God…  guess there really are two Americas as that Democrat icon John Edwards told us years ago.

Federal judge sides with ACORN, clearly nuts

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Just saw this news report from AP on FoxNews:

A federal judge has ruled the U.S. government’s move to cut off funding to ACORN is unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Nina Gershon issued the preliminary injunction against the government Friday. She ruled that it is in the public’s interest for the organization to continue receiving federal funding.

ACORN claimed in its lawsuit that Congress’ decision to cut off its funding was unconstitutional because it punitively targeted an organization.

A lawyer for ACORN says the decision sends a sharp message to Congress that it can’t single out an individual or organization without due process.

What they are essentially claiming here is that Congress passed a Bill of Attainder directed at ACORN:

A bill of attainder (also known as an act or writ of attainder) is an act of the legislature declaring a person or group of persons guilty of some crime and punishing them without benefit of a trial.

I’m no lawyer, but since when is it considered punishment to refuse to fund an organization or person?  Does that mean every other organization that Congress chooses to not spend our tax dollars on can claim they are being singled out and punished?

This is a ridiculous ruling, this judge is wrong, and this will get reversed if our government bothers to appeal it… be interesting to see if they do appeal since they probably like the idea of being “forced” to fund ACORN.  That way they can fund this bunch of crooks and say they had no choice, the judge made them do it.

This ruling does send a sharp message though… government spending is so out of control, organizations can now claim an inalienable right to our money.

Gorewellians Exposed?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

If this is legit, you betcha…

From various sources, not sure who first posted or where this info was first posted, but here’s the Telegraph’s take:

The conspiracy behind the Anthropogenic Global Warming myth (aka AGW; aka ManBearPig) has been suddenly, brutally and quite deliciously exposed after a hacker broke into the computers at the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit (aka Hadley CRU) and released 61 megabites of confidential files onto the internet. (Hat tip: Watts Up With That)

<snip>

But perhaps the most damaging revelations – the scientific equivalent of the Telegraph’s MPs’ expenses scandal – are those concerning the way Warmist scientists may variously have manipulated or suppressed evidence in order to support their cause.

The article includes several sample emails as does Watts Up With That and The Herald Sun.

For years Gorewellians have tried to scare us into believing that radical behavioral change is required to save the Earth from the terrible effects of human-caused global warming.

Those of us who were skeptical were lumped in with the nuts who believe man never landed on the moon.

Forget that Gore and many of his followers do not practice what they preach, flying all over the globe in private jets and leaving a carbon footprint far exceeding that of just about every American.

Pay no attention to the millions of dollars earned by folks like Gore who are cashing in on this fear.

Never mind how much supporters stand to gain through the sale of new technologies to combat global warming.

Don’t dare question how “buying” an acre of rain forest to ease your guilt about driving a Hummer does anything beyond putting money into the pockets of profiteers.

All of that is nothing more than deflections, distractions and deceptions  spun by those among us who refuse to believe the absolute fact that global warming is a foregone conclusion and that man’s culpability is settled science.

Even Bill O’Reilly says we’re idiots for questioning the “facts”:

I am a big fan of the Factor and was disappointed O’Reilly went with the pack on this one without questioning how much truly was settled science and how much was spin from folks who stand to profit from the battle against global warming.

Assuming this leak is a legit look into a cover up of facts that run counter to the position that global warming exists and is man made, it is reasonable to question why the need for a cover up if this is settled science.  And if this is not settled science, questioning is appropriate (actually, even if it is settled science, questioning is appropriate… it used to be settled science that the Earth was flat).

And… if questioning is appropriate, I suppose those of us questioning the “facts” are not idiots after all.

Now about that moon landing…  just kidding.

UPDATED: SEIU vs Volunteers – Which Obama Pet Wins?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

UPDATE: 11/20 See update over at Michelle Malkin: SEIU leader who threatened Boy Scout quits

… and also from the Morning Call:

Three days of taking body blows nationally from conservative pundits, a rebuke from the Lehigh Valley’s congressman and even a lashing from his own union led Balzano to voluntarily resign his position Thursday as head of the local Service Employees International Union.

Balzano said he and seven other executive officers of the local SEIU stepped down.

Unfortunate outcome to something that could have been easily avoided by simply acknowledging that not everyone needs to bow to the wishes of SEIU.

———————————————————–

Article in the Morning Call of Allentown, PA -

In pursuit of an Eagle Scout badge, Kevin Anderson, 17, has toiled for more than 200 hours hours over several weeks to clear a walking path in an east Allentown park.

Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing Anderson to clear a 1,000-foot walking and biking path at Kimmets Lock Park.

“We’ll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails,” Balzano told the council.

SEIU will be looking into the Boy Scout who did the trails?  Seriously?

Isn’t this the same SEIU who’s president has visited the White House more than any other person on this Earth?

Wasn’t this Boy Scout volunteering his time as President Obama has encouraged all Americans to do?

Do we need to check in with the unions, specifically SEIU, prior to performing volunteer work to avoid a visit from a few thugs with baseball bats?

More from the Morning Call -

Balzano said Saturday he isn’t targeting Boy Scouts. But given the city’s decision in July to lay off 39 SEIU members, Balzano said “there’s to be no volunteers.” No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path.

SEIU has spoken!

But, but.. how do we know what we can and can’t volunteer to do?  Doesn’t the president want all Americans to volunteer?

Calling service an integral part of how we meet the challenges of our time, President Barack Obama renewed his appeal for all Americans to make service a part of their daily lives in an address to 2,000 service leaders gathered at the Points of Light Institute’s “Presidential Forum on Service” at Texas A& M University on October 16th.

Perhaps President Obama should send out a clarification.  Perhaps we should make service a part of our daily lives as long as that service has been authorized by the local chapter of SEIU or is sanctioned by ACORN as an appropriate use of our time and energy.

Thankfully it appears this young scout may be given a reprieve because of the attention this has received:

“We are probably going to let this one go,” Balzano said .

Probably…  maybe he should lock the doors just in case.

Folks losing their jobs is sad and an unfortunate consequence of an economy that is being driven into the ground by our “leaders” in Congress.

But this scout did not take anyone’s job.  No one was going to be hired to complete this project.  The only thing that would have been “accomplished” by stopping this scout is the path would still be inaccessible to folks who can now enjoy some fresh air and exercise along its route.

So happy SEIU has such influence over our president and, apparently, our lives.
