Obama living up to pre-election expectations?

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Taking a trip back in time to see how perceived ideas about candidate Barack Obama have translated into the reality of President Barack Obama.

Back then many of us were concerned that his lack of experience in any kind of leadership role would lead to missteps large and small on a daily basis and an inability to respond to crises in an effective and timely manner.  Thinkin’ we were spot on on these points.

But some pointed to other skills Obama possessed that would serve him well in his role as president:

  1. Incredible communication skills
  2. Proven judgment
  3. Deals with people well
  4. Understands issues
  5. Brings people together

I think it is safe to say our president has not demonstrated a proficiency in any of these skills.

  1. He is as dependent on the teleprompter as we suspected
  2. He has prioritized a not-so-hidden agenda over critical issues facing the nation and has made wave-of-the-hand decisions with a so-it-is-written mentality on complex issues such as detainment of terrorists at Gitmo
  3. He has taken an extremely partisan approach to governing while treating those with dissenting views as imbeciles
  4. He seeks to understand issues that are not important to him on a very cursory level
  5. His efforts to bring people together have been limited to patching up differences he has contributed to (beer summit) and disingenuous attempts to reach across Party lines to  solicit ideas he has no intention of considering for a moment

How’s that compare to what we thought two years ago?  Pretty much spot on.  Even if we set aside ideological differences that cause us to look longingly to 2012, so far Obama has done little to inspire confidence in his ability to lead.  We have had disasters and crises that have been made worse by incompetence in this administration;  if we are hit with a a crises on the scale of 9/11…

What if North & South Korea go to war? What if we receive intelligence that Iran is prepared to launch a nuclear strike on Israel? What if the USA loses its triple-A rating and the economy collapses? What if China decides now is a good time to attack Taiwan? What if the unemployment rate spikes after the census workers’ time runs out? What if the current disaster in the Gulf turns into the last straw for a fragile economy?

What actions is this administration taking to prevent these crises, as well as many others lurking out there, and to prepare a response if any occur?

At this point it feels like they are prepared to litigate any and all crises into submission… that’s not leadership, that’s formal finger pointing after the fact.

Let’s hope that a change in congressional leadership in 2010 will provide  sufficient legislative leadership to compensate for executive leadership.

From June 30, 2008,  Clark outlines Obama’s qualifications for prez:

Finally! Someone can tell me why I should vote for Obama. According to General Clark on Face the Nation:

“… what Barack Obama brings is incredible communication skills, proven judgment, you look at his meteoric rise in politics and you see a guy who deals with people well, who understands issues, who brings people together, and who has good judgment in moving forward.”

<snip>

“Barack is not, he is not running on the fact that he has made these national security pronouncements. He’s running on his other strengths. He’s running on strengths of character, on the strength of his communication skills, on the strengths of his judgment, and those are qualities that we seek in our national leadership.”

<snip>

“There’s not a learning period in this job. The next president’s gonna have to step right into the job, he’s gonna have to have the policies there…”

So… instead of experience or concrete solutions, Obama brings:

  • Incredible communication skills
  • Proven judgment
  • Deals with people well
  • Understands issues
  • Brings people together

Sounds like the qualifications for a Customer Services Rep (CSR).

That aside, assuming we really don’t mind him not having any experience or concrete solutions to problems (beyond taxing the wealthy and increasing the oil supply by taxing big oil (like any tax on oil companies wouldn’t be passed down to you and me, and how does that increase supply?)), assuming these really were the qualifications for president and not a CSR, does Obama have what it takes to be a CSR… err.. president:

  • Incredible communication skills
  • Proven judgment
    • Really? The depth of a person’s judgment can be inferred from the company he keeps. Which is why we tell our kids to not hang with drug addicts and delinquents (advice Obama apparently did not heed in his youth… a pattern of poor judgment that continues today)
  • Deals with people well
    • Was inclined to give him this one… then I remembered how he keeps dragging race into the campaign while accusing others of dragging it into the campaign. Accusing people of racism without any evidence does not indicate an ability to deal well with people in my view – check out this clip from CNN — by the way, CNN’s Cafferty (at 2:04 in the clip) all but accused Republicans of being racists and none of their analysts thought Obama’s statement was out of line

(unfortunately the video was taken down since the original post)

  • Understands issues
  • Brings people together
    • Can anyone give us an example of Obama bringing people together?

Remembering the good old days of “high unemployment”

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Remembering the good old days when Dems criticized Bush for huge unemployment rates…

On the Hill – June 6, 2008 – The Democratic Congress is working to address the faltering economy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi charges, blaming President Bush for fiscal woes as the unemployment rate increased to 5.5 percent.

“The New Direction Congress will send the President legislation to provide urgently needed assistance to millions of Americans who have lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meet,” Pelosi adds. “Just as we worked cooperatively in passing a stimulus plan to put $117 billion into the hands of more than 130 million Americans, we urge the President to support legislation to address the needs of America’s unemployed and struggling workers. Today’s unemployment numbers demonstrate that this is an urgent challenge.”

Wow!  5.5%… who wouldn’t take that today?  Good to see Pelosi was tackling this as an urgent challenge two years ago…  a bit strange that it is no longer an urgent challenge now that we are close to 10%… guess she met her goal.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi March 7, 2003 – “President Bush’s first $1.7 trillion tax cut came with a promise — that it would create jobs and grow the economy. We all know that it has not. The rhetoric was good, but the reality couldn’t be more different. Today’s unemployment numbers show that 308,000 jobs were lost last month, the biggest one-month job loss in 18 months. Overall, President Bush has the worst record on job creation of any President in nearly 60 years.

“We need policies that create jobs. It is that simple. Democrats have proposed an economic stimulus package that nonpartisan observers say will create 1 million jobs this year, five times more than the Bush plan. President Bush’s policies have produced record job loss — Democrats propose policies that will create jobs. The choice for the American people is clear.”

The unemployment rate was 5.9% in February and March of 2003, unacceptable to Mrs. Pelosi.  For the record, the average rate under President Bush was 5.3% over 8 years; amazing when you factor in the major hit to the economy on 9/11.

So… how’s the Obama record?  Perhaps too soon to tell.  So let’s look at the Pelosi/Reid record.

When Pelosi, Reid and the Democrats took over congress in January 2007, the unemployment rate was down to 4.6% with a Republican president and congress. Today it is close to 10% and likely would be over that if not for the temporary census jobs inflating the employment figures.

But jobs are not job one with Reid, Pelosi and Obama.  First we need health care legislation, “stimulus” bills that are laden with pork, cap and trade, denial of the right to a secret ballot for folks voting on unionization…

Maybe they should look to some of the “failed policies” of the Bush administration to see if we can at least get back to the good old days of high unemployment rates like 5.5%.

Quick Thought: Reid/Pelosi/Obama Priorities the Same as Ours?

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

With the nation facing 9-10% unemployment, President Obama, Senator Reid, and Speaker Pelosi spent over a year pushing “health care reform” that we now know will put our economy further in the hole.

OK… health care bill passed, next up tackle the economy?  Well, actually yes.  In much the same way LT tackled QBs.

Up next on the Obama/Reid/Pelosi agenda? Cap and Trade… which is essentially the selling of the rights to pollute from one company to another.  Not sure how that reduces pollution, but it certainly moves money from one company to another for nothing more than a right to pollute (assuming you agree that CO2 is a pollutant).  In the middle of all this? Traders who will skim profits from every trade.  This will drive up the cost of energy, which will drive up the cost of products, which will further cripple the economy and put increase pressure on employment.

But wait… what about securing our borders, or immigration reform, depending on your perspective on the issue?  Nope, gotta get that Cap and Trade thing going so Democrats who are voted out of office in November will have another corrupt institution to run to next year.

So.. what would you say our priorities are?

Unemployment/jobs?

National debt?

Securing our borders?

I don’t know about you, but I really don’t see how health care “reform” and “cap and trade” trump these issues… unless of course the rush is to push through an agenda that has no chance once balance is restored in our government.

There he goes again…

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

President Barack Obama believes in the pharaoh method when it comes to leading a nation, or at least as it was portrayed by Yul Brynner.

All he need do is say the word and the word becomes reality… “So it is written, so it shall be done“.

More than one year ago President Barack Obama proclaimed Guantanamo “will be closed no later than one year from now.”

Not might be closed, not we plan to close, not it is important we close, not targeted to close, not we hope it is closed, not barring any unforeseen circumstance beyond our control it will be closed…

No! “Will be closed no later than one year from now.”  Will be closed! So it is written, so it shall be done.

Not closed.

In August, President Obama commanded that a special high-value, detainee-interrogation group (HIG) be created to ensure appropriate handling and interrogation of terrorist suspects.  According to AP:

“The unit would be led by an FBI official, with a deputy director from somewhere in the government’s vast intelligence apparatus, and members from across agencies. It will be directly supervised by the White House, but the senior administration officials insisted the unit’s agency bosses will make operational decisions, not the White House.

Shouldn’t be too hard to pull together.  Need an FBI guy, some reps from other agencies, and a reporting mechanism to keep the White House in the loop.

I estimate it would take me no more than one week to pull together this team (but then, I am very good at managing projects and teams :-)

Seems like a pretty important team to pull together to close a major gap now that all of the Bush administration approaches to interrogation have been abandoned, so clearly President Obama would be on top of this and ensure this team is up and active and protecting the United States from the bad guys.

What’s that?  They don’t actually exist yet?  Did anyone tell the president? Oh, I see… no need.  All that matters is that something is announced… so it is written, so it shall be done!  Phew, this leading stuff is hard work.

Too bad though, since we’ve all ready had three attacks by terrorists here on US soil since President Obama was inaugurated, including the Christmas Eve Underwear Bomber.  An interrogation unit might have come in handy.

So it was with great interest that I listened to President Obama, during the State of the Union Address, tell us that:

(Transcript from FoxNews) – … we will double our exports over the next five years, an increase that will support two million jobs in America.

And the only thing I hear is “So it is written, so it shall be done!”

My bet, he hasn’t clue one how to accomplish this, will not even do anything more than talk about it or form some commission to talk about it, and will continue on his current path of reshaping our economy into the image of “fairness” that he believes is what America should be all about:  a dependency on huge government that will be tougher addiction to kick than tobacco and as damaging as sniffing glue as we evolve to a nation of drones with no real incentive to innovate because any rewards will be taxed (literally) to death to support a government infrastructure that will be designed to ensure a voting block that must keep Democrats in office to maintain the steady fix of free money.

May not be written, but certainly will be done…  unless we restore some balance of power in November.

Stunning White House Admission

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

According to team Obama, Scott Brown did not win because of his ideas, his vision of America, or because people are sending a message to Obama, Reid and Pelosi..  no, it’s because Americans are frustrated and angry (and clinging to their guns and religion perhaps?).

Senior Advisor David Axelrod:

“The same forces that swept Obama to office in 2008 are still very much astride the country today. The same frustration among middle class Americans about the situation they’re in, they’re working harder than ever just to try and keep up.”

There you have it.

It was not his ideas.

It was not the color of his skin.

It was not his eloquent speeches.

It was not his great campaigning skills.

It was not that he was the right man for the job.

It was not that he brought change that we can believe in.

Barack Obama was elected president because people are angry.

Barack Obama was elected by a bunch of frustrated Americans who will vote for just about anyone who is not the incumbent or a member of the incumbent’s Party.  Heck, they would even have voted for Howard Dean or Al Sharpton at this point.

I guess he didn’t have a mandate for change after all…  Just another check mark next to the box labeled: “Anyone Else”.

How’d I do?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

** Update:  According to AP, final breakout –

  • Brown 51.9
  • Coakley 47.1
  • Kennedy 1.0

Missed by one/tenth of one percent…  oh well.

*****************

If you’ve visited with any frequency, you know I like to try to predict stuff.  Don’t have a perfect track record, but when I get one right, I also like to gloat :-)

Brown v. Coakley

Prediction from 1/18:

  • Brown 51.8
  • Coakley 48.2
  • Kennedy (na)

Results from AP 1/19:

  • Brown 51.8
  • Coakley 47.2
  • Kennedy 1.0

If only I had bothered to account for Kennedy …

Of course the final tally is not in.  Still 5 of 2168 precincts not reporting, so by tomorrow that 51.8% could change…

I suppose even if it changes a bit I’ll still be close.

Folks in Massachusetts are Americans first

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Folks in Massachusetts, like folks around this great country, are Americans first.   We don’t like being treated like we need to just behave and be quiet while the adults in Washington decide what’s best for us.

Message should be received by the “leadership” in DC…  but will it?  Guess we’ll see if they continue to play games, driven by the arrogance of people who know what’s best for the rest of us… or will they accept the message and back off.

My bet?  They are so arrogant they will keep moving forward, confident in the knowledge that we’ll eventually get it.  That in time, even stupid folks like us will understand they are just acting in our best interest.  And we will ultimately thank them and keep them in office until the end of time.

Not thinkin’ they get it.
