Franken or Pelosi… who has more class?

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Was about to write about Nancy Pelosi, then saw this clip of Al Franken acting like the mean-spirited, condescending, asshole that he is and couldn’t decide which to write about, so decided to not decide and write about both:

First … this guy is the most junior senator in the Senate.  Why on Earth is he chairing ANYTHING?

Second…  it has been many years since I served as the parliamentarian for an organization or brushed up on Robert’s Rules of Order, but I believe Franken was out of order; before he can speak or object as a member he must first step down from the chair

Third… what a disrespectful, mean-spirited, condescending, self-absorbed, egotistical, self-important little twit!  Senator Lieberman requested a couple of minutes to finish his statement, a request that is always agreed to without objection out of respect and courtesy among senators, and this low-life injects his brand of sarcastic disdain for anyone to the right of Fidel Castro into one of the most respected and formal institutions in our government.

As predicted, Al Franken is an embarrassment to our country and to the people of Minnesota who elected him.

Speaking of left-wing partisans… Nancy Pelosi.

In October of 2008 Nancy Pelosi said:

“Elect us, hold us accountable, and make a judgment and then go from there. But I do tell you that if the Democrats win, and have substantial majorities, Congress of the United States will be more bipartisan,” said Pelosi.

Seem more bipartisan to you?  Maybe she meant twice-as-partisan.

The latest example of her bipartisanship is with the congressional delegation in Copenhagen.  Apparently there was a press conference held today and someone forgot to invite the Republicans.  In fact, the Republicans were denied access to the press conference.

When asked about this obvious partisan play, in a foreign country where we expect our “leaders” to leave domestic politics behind, Pelosi said the Republicans were welcome to hold their own press conference.

Way to show a united front, one America, indivisible, under God…  guess there really are two Americas as that Democrat icon John Edwards told us years ago.

Can the government create real jobs really?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Let’s say you have five kids.  Four have jobs, one doesn’t.

You feel bad the fifth doesn’t have a job, so you take 25% of the income from the four employed kids and “hire” the fifth kid to do shovel ready projects around the house.

Does the fifth kid really have a real job now?  Is it self-sustaining?  How long before the other four kids get tired of paying the fifth kid?

Of course it’s not a real job…

When our government makes temporary jobs to hire people for shovel ready jobs, jobs that are not self-sustaining,  jobs that can only exist as long as people with real jobs are able to pay for these jobs out of their own pockets… these aren’t real jobs either.

The Pelosi controlled House has passed a “jobs” bill:

FoxNews - President Obama’s Democratic allies in the House have muscled through a year-end measure aimed at creating jobs through a second round of stimulus spending.

According to documents released by Democrats, the measure would cost $154 billion. But there’s also another $20 billion from the federal treasury to keep the highway trust fund afloat.

The bill is funded partly with unused money from the government’s unpopular Wall Street bailout program called the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). The bill redirects $75 billion in that fund to infrastructure and job investments to further stabilize the economy.

Ummm.. wasn’t that TARP money supposed to be repaid to us after it was no longer needed to save the country from imminent ruin?

This is nothing more than transferring money from the pockets of those who have jobs to the pockets of those who don’t.

Not that it is a bad thing to help folks out, but wouldn’t they be better served by stimulating the private job market so that there are self-sustaining jobs out there?

How do we expect private industry to afford to hire new employees if they keep having to send more money to the government to hire government workers?

The method utilized by this Democratic controlled government is an anemic attempt to address unemployment in the short term that will result in a extended weakness in the economy, extended weakness in the real job market, increased debt and taxes, and ultimately inflation and high interest rates.

Other than that… a great idea.

We had a choice in 2006…

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

We chose change.  Before the election of 2008, before Barack Obama, before the decision to “fundamentally change the United States of America”… we the people had already decided to change the leadership in the US Senate and the US House.  Back in 2006, Thinkin’Bout Stuff produced a political ad that received some good press but little exposure (no clue how folks get their videos to go viral).

The video ask why we would want change when we were experiencing record stock prices, low unemployment, low interest rates, record home ownership, real wages up and inflation low, steadily declining gas prices and lower income taxes.

It asked why we would want change when we had gone without an attack on American soil (including US embassies and ships at sea) since 9/11, national crime rates were down, Saddam Hussein, Uday, Qusay, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi all gone, Muammar Qaddafi denouncing terrorism and nukes, Osama bin Laden in hiding.

But we wanted a change.  Two years later, we apparently wanted even more change… in the same direction.

So.. how’s that working out for us?

Stock prices since 2006 took a major hit before recovering…  many folks took a major hit in their 401k plans and had to delay retirement.

Unemployment?  The rate has more than doubled.  Back in 2006 the Democrats were telling us 4.5% unemployment was unacceptable and we needed change… who knew they meant it was too low.

Interest rates are still low, but home ownership by folks who could not afford the homes they purchased with high-risk loans, with the encouragement of folks like Barney Frank, led to foreclosures and a crash in the housing market.

Real wages are down, inflation is on the horizon as the US dives deeper into debt, gas prices have climbed, and income taxes are going up next year as tax cuts expire.

On the security front, Iran is about to have a nuke and a delivery system, Afghanistan and Pakistan think we are pulling out in 18 months so they are trying to avoid annoying the Taliban… who we believe continue to harbor bin Ladan, the threat from North Korea and even Venezuela is growing, terrorists are being granted the same rights as US citizens and civil trials, and we have had a terrorist attack on a military base right here in the United States that our president refuses to treat as a terrorist attack despite mounting evidence.

Well done…

Next year, I actually agree with the folks who believe we need to make a change in our leadership…. no matter who we elect, it’s hard to imagine they could do worse than this crew.

Unemployment gender gap: Was beginning to think no one else noticed

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

July 2 this year we published a chart showing a significant and growing gap between the unemployment rate for men and women.  Even sent a copy of the chart to a couple of media folks.  Either missed all of the media discussion on the subject or no one thought it was interesting enough to report.

Yesterday’s opinion piece in the WSJ, by David Paul Kuhn, is the first I’ve seen on the subject.

Why is this gap significant?  If we assume that in most American households the man is still the main source of income, the impact of the unemployment rate on American families is greater than has been reported since the rate for men 20-years and older passed 10% all the way back in July.

Here’s the latest chart:

Not sure why this has not been worthy of discussion before today, but here are some excerpts from the WSJ article:

Last month the unemployment rate climbed above 10% for the first time in more than a quarter century. Less noticed is that male workers crossed this same threshold six months earlier. Since the U.S. became the world’s dominant economic power, no downturn has fallen more disproportionately on one gender.

The unemployment rate for men, 11.4%, based on seasonally adjusted data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, outpaces the rate for women, 8.8%. We now have the largest jobless gender gap since tracking became possible in 1948.

<snip>

And yet, for all its unprecedented scope and nature, the limited attention and passive response it has received are remarkable. Imagine the outcry if women amounted to roughly three in four lost jobs in this recession.

<snip>

The solution is not a male version of the Labor Department’s Women’s Bureau. Men don’t need to start viewing themselves as victims. But the stimulus or new jobs bills could be adjusted to address the wave of male unemployment by expanding public works spending. It would make for more effective policy and be fairer. As the feminist movement taught us, what happens to one gender happens to us all.

Especially since the impact spreads to the whole family when dad is out of work.

Who’s money is it anyway?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Someone overpays you $200,000,000,000 – do you:

  1. Give them back their money
  2. Buy them “something nice” and give that to them instead
  3. Hang on to the money in case you need it for something later

That’s pretty much the question in front of our leaders in Congress and the White House:

Politico -

Congressional Democrats could be careening toward a head-on collision with the White House over $200 billion in leftover bailout money — money that Republicans think should simply be returned to taxpayers.

AKA give us back our money.

The Treasury Department is pushing for fiscal prudence and wants to use the money to pay down the deficit and keep a small rainy-day fund in case of economic catastrophe.

AKA hang on to the money in case they need the money later.

But Democrats are salivating over the possibility of $200 billion in unspent money.

House Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson of Connecticut wants dough to fund job-creation legislation. Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank, the powerful chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, wants to direct $2 billion of repaid Troubled Asset Relief Program funds to loans for unemployed homeowners so they can avoid foreclosure. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California admits that “there’s a good bit of interest” in spreading the money around to various economic projects.

AKA buy us “something nice” and give us that instead of our money.

That $200B, part of the huge $700 bank bailout at the end of 2008, was supposed to be repaid to we the people if it wasn’t needed.   The fact that there is even a question about whether or not that money should be returned to us proves that these people, especially the Democrats, can not be trusted with our money.

Might want to consider this very clear difference in the way our leaders view our money the next time you decide who you want spending your money … I know I’ll be voting for the guys who want to give me my money back.

UPDATED: SEIU vs Volunteers – Which Obama Pet Wins?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

UPDATE: 11/20 See update over at Michelle Malkin: SEIU leader who threatened Boy Scout quits

… and also from the Morning Call:

Three days of taking body blows nationally from conservative pundits, a rebuke from the Lehigh Valley’s congressman and even a lashing from his own union led Balzano to voluntarily resign his position Thursday as head of the local Service Employees International Union.

Balzano said he and seven other executive officers of the local SEIU stepped down.

Unfortunate outcome to something that could have been easily avoided by simply acknowledging that not everyone needs to bow to the wishes of SEIU.

———————————————————–

Article in the Morning Call of Allentown, PA -

In pursuit of an Eagle Scout badge, Kevin Anderson, 17, has toiled for more than 200 hours hours over several weeks to clear a walking path in an east Allentown park.

Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing Anderson to clear a 1,000-foot walking and biking path at Kimmets Lock Park.

“We’ll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails,” Balzano told the council.

SEIU will be looking into the Boy Scout who did the trails?  Seriously?

Isn’t this the same SEIU who’s president has visited the White House more than any other person on this Earth?

Wasn’t this Boy Scout volunteering his time as President Obama has encouraged all Americans to do?

Do we need to check in with the unions, specifically SEIU, prior to performing volunteer work to avoid a visit from a few thugs with baseball bats?

More from the Morning Call -

Balzano said Saturday he isn’t targeting Boy Scouts. But given the city’s decision in July to lay off 39 SEIU members, Balzano said “there’s to be no volunteers.” No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path.

SEIU has spoken!

But, but.. how do we know what we can and can’t volunteer to do?  Doesn’t the president want all Americans to volunteer?

Calling service an integral part of how we meet the challenges of our time, President Barack Obama renewed his appeal for all Americans to make service a part of their daily lives in an address to 2,000 service leaders gathered at the Points of Light Institute’s “Presidential Forum on Service” at Texas A& M University on October 16th.

Perhaps President Obama should send out a clarification.  Perhaps we should make service a part of our daily lives as long as that service has been authorized by the local chapter of SEIU or is sanctioned by ACORN as an appropriate use of our time and energy.

Thankfully it appears this young scout may be given a reprieve because of the attention this has received:

“We are probably going to let this one go,” Balzano said .

Probably…  maybe he should lock the doors just in case.

Folks losing their jobs is sad and an unfortunate consequence of an economy that is being driven into the ground by our “leaders” in Congress.

But this scout did not take anyone’s job.  No one was going to be hired to complete this project.  The only thing that would have been “accomplished” by stopping this scout is the path would still be inaccessible to folks who can now enjoy some fresh air and exercise along its route.

So happy SEIU has such influence over our president and, apparently, our lives.

A president’s disdain for Americans who disagree

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Click Teabagger if you do not know what a “tea bagger” is… but be warned, it’s a pretty disgusting thing to call someone.

Now maybe Bill Clinton does not know what the term means, I didn’t until a few hours ago, but adopting a pejorative when you know the source is a left-wing extremist like Janeane Garofalo is risky.  Even if the former president and members of the Obama administration have no clue what it means, is it really acceptable for them to look upon American citizens, who are in opposition to their attempts to transform this country, with disdain while resorting to name calling?

Might want to keep that in mind next time you vote… it could be you that is on the wrong side on the next issue.

Here Garofalo calls Tea Party protesters “tea bagging rednecks”:

She has repeated this slur multiple times during other interviews.

Unfortunately folks like Garofalo are probably getting a good laugh out of this as even conservative commentators have started saying Tea Party protesters are tea bagging Washington.  I’m sure none of these folks knows the slang meaning of what they are saying…  maybe someone should clue them in.
