Hi hsmith. I agree with you for the most part. Even with traders messing with prices, except in situations such as your own where folks have no choice but to buy, the market will ultimately drive the price over the long haul. I'm no expert... just seemed to me that if prices were going to move to a certain price point based upon market conditions, might as well drive them there in a way that would keep the dollars at home and use the money to find ways to get us out of this mess. Instead, two years later, the prices are up and the money is flying across our borders. Unfortunately, our options appear to be limited until we open up more areas for exploration (short term), tap into liquid coal as you mentioned (mid term), and really drive towards an ultimate solution through a non-hydrocarbon based energy source (long-term). Thanks for a great comment.. got me thinkin' again. Hope you (we) get relief soon.

You have brought up some good points, but failed to note that many of us have no choice about whether or not to drive. I live in TX, and there is no public transportation that I can take to my job or the grocery store or church, or hardly anywhere else I have to go. Unfortunately, the auto lobby and oil and gas lobby sold us out years ago when they insisted we have buses in our cities instead of electric trollies and demanded long haul trucks and automobiles rather than trains to transport goods and people long distances. Older cities have developed rail systems still functioning, but sprawling states like TX and CA have few rail or bus routes in the suburbs. In addition, much of the pricing problem apparently is the result of traders (most working for the oil companies) making ridiculous profits at our expense. I believe we have the technology right now to transform our own plentiful coal resources to clean energy that we could burn in our cars, but that technology is blocked from production by those in power. In a nutshell, the special interests have gotten their way for decades, and now our entire economy rests in the hands of oil companies. Obviously, they think more of their bottom line than the people or the country. We, the people, are in a heck of a predictament - we are totally dependent on those who are breaking us. Please do not add more to the price of gasoline - I just paid nearly $100 to fill up my car, and I honestly do not see how I can pay any more.

Valid points. Based upon where we are today? Yes, I believe Iraq is an important "front" in the overall war. I also believe we need to continue to bring more attention to Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Philippines and Somalia to name a few. World Wars, which this essentially is, require that we attack on many fronts; ideally, from a very selfish perspective, I'd prefer the front never come home again. Since we are in Iraq, and since Al Qaeda is there, seems only logical to fight them in Iraq.
